Roselyn Sanchez just booked a one-way ticket to Fantasy Island: The Devious Maids and Grand Hotel alum will star in Fox’s reboot of the classic TV show.
Sanchez will play Elena Roarke, a direct descendant of Ricardo Montalban’s Mr. Roarke from the original 1977-84 ABC series. “Elena set aside her own ambitions, and even the love of her life, to uphold her family’s legacy,” according to the official description. “Sophisticated, insightful and always charming, Elena’s calm exterior masks the challenges of the responsibilities she has assumed as steward of this mysterious island.”
The reboot will premiere Tuesday, Aug. 10 on Fox; production is already underway in Puerto Rico. Like the original, this Fantasy Island will be an anthology set at a luxury resort where guests can have any fantasy fulfilled, “although they rarely turn out as expected.” Each episode will follow new guests and “tell emotional, provocative stories about people who arrive with dreams and desires and depart enlightened and transformed through the magical realism of Fantasy Island.”
Sanchez joins a cast that includes Kiara Barnes (The Bold and the Beautiful) as Ruby Okoro, a young woman who arrives on Fantasy Island with a terminal illness, and John Gabriel Rodriguez (Rosewood) as Javier, the island’s pilot and head of transportation.
After breaking out with roles in Rush Hour 2 and CBS’ Without a Trace, Sanchez starred as housemaid Carmen Luna on Lifetime’s Devious Maids, which ended a four-season run in 2016. She went on to headline ABC’s summer soap Grand Hotel in 2019, which was cancelled after one season. Her other TV credits include The Rookie, Rizzoli & Isles and Royal Pains.
Wow, another reboot. I love the actress but I’m going to pass on this one. I still miss the original team of Mr. Rourke and Tattoo.
you know they’re both DEAD right ?
This is a sequel series not a reboot e.g.. which is why it says she is a direct descendant of Mr. Rourke so either his daughter or grandfdaughter.
Reboot is starting the show over from scratch this will continue the story from the old show.
Yikes another reboot? I was all excited for the movie since it was supposed to be a horror film and it wasn’t even remotely scary nor was the story compelling. Hopefully they either actually go dark and take this into deep dark mystery, or they do a literal reboot that’s the same old show, even set back then still. A hokey modern telling of this set in today’s time is not what we need or want from this franchise.
How do we start a petition to have a Devious Maids or Ugly Betty revival on ABC/Hulu? Those are the comebacks we want, they can keep anything else.
Yesssss, Archie!! I am with you! Those are my dream reboots. That and 3rd Rock From the Sun.
I still love the 90’s reboot . Malcom McDowell was AMAZING as Roarke, true the stories were a little weak and the guest casting was even weaker but there are some really fun episodes in those 13 episodes. I would love it if a DVD set or a streaming service would add it. it really deserved a longer run. this sounds fun, but why is she a descendant of Roarke. it was implied He was immortal in the original and possibly an Angel or God, given the fact he went up against The Devil twice ( as played by the legendary Roddy McDowell) I get they want to honor Ricardo Montalban possibly but Roarke should not be “dead”. I hope they don’t go that route, and perhaps she is just tending the Island for him while he has another assignment.
I just watched the movie, it was AWFUL!! Michael Pena was in it, he’s a good actor. It was so weird.
Good luck with the reboot, but I’ll pass.
For all those talking about the movie, it’s NOT based on that. It similarly is based on the original show but is not a dark/horror type of film the way that was advertised. “. Delving into the “what if” questions — both big and small — that keep us awake at night, each episode will tell emotional, provocative stories about people who arrive with dreams and desires and depart enlightened and transformed through the magical realism of Fantasy Island.”
It will be the island from LOST.
The concept is definitely good for a revival (despite the bad movie adaptation). It’ll depend on whether the network/writers are able to develope interesting stories. Network shows trend to be afraid to take any chances and risk enraging either side of the political spectrum.
My only thing is why even give her a back story if the show is a full anthology like the original like yeah we got a few inklings of info about roarke but it was never a main focus ya know so them already giving her this elaborate backstory makes me feel like it’s gonna be more serialized than we are being led to believe but obviously just a theory of mine lol
Its a anthology in the sense that each season will have a cast of new guests that come to the island but we will have permanent residents of the island we follow such as Elena and I’m sure her island staff.
so each season should be serialized in that sense but each season will begin a new storyline with new guests still making it a anthology series.
Hopefully they don’t turn this into an unnecessary horror thing like the movie. Keep it surreal, suspense, dramatic and black comedy. Not horror.
Perfect casting!
Can’t wait!!; Aug 10th.
