Squeaking one last little mermaid in under the wire! The rough sketch for this has been sitting in a drawer since 2019, ha. I’ve had a lot of time to decide on a hair colour. Red it always tempting, but I went for silvery-white instead, since the octopus is red (something always has to be red 😜)
@monstersandmaw reminded me about this drawing and I thought I’d reblog it, because when I drew it back in May, I don’t think I had any actual followers yet lol. I tried to do Mermay this year but got derailed and only managed about five drawings. The sad mermaid was the best one :-)
Finally got around to painting this sketch I drew for Mermay last year 😂 Who says Neptune has to be an old bearded man? He must have been young once. I fancy he was a ginger 😜
I’ll post process pics on Instagram, for anyone who’s interested (I’m @ekbelsher there too)
The little mermaid ;-)
I thought it would be fun to show a comparison of one of my mermaid drawings to the original life drawing that I based it on. Life models sometimes do poses that make perfect mermaid reference! I have a finished scene in mind for this sad little mermaid.
Yikes, it’s the last day of Mermay! Just getting one in under the wire. This is a classic, old-school mermaid, so I did flat lighting to give it the feel of a Golden Age illustration :)
I promised to do a mermaid of colour, so here she is! She’s based on one of my favourite-ever figure models. I always loved the graceful poses this lovely woman would do for us 😊
The reason I enjoy Mermay is that it provides a perfect excuse to draw bonkers hair – but why settle for just the hair when you could also have bonkers tail fins?
For the first day of Mermay 2020, I bring you a very classic mermaid. As classic as I can make her, in fact. I feel like I always default to white skin for mermaids (probably because white skin is easier on white paper!), so tomorrow I’ll go for a little diversity.
Here’s my first sketch for Mermay 2019: Neptune hitting on a woman, because there’s no law that says a seductive siren has to be female. I mean, how many humans would turn *him* down??
Drawing number four in the greyscale experiment! When I was learning to draw, I was very focused on lines, and then went straight from sketches to colour. I could have spent more time getting a solid handle on how lights and darks affect a composition. I’m temporarily taking colour out of the equation, so when I go back to making finished art, I will hopefully be armed with a firmer grasp of value🤞
