With “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” doing incredibly well at the box office, it would appear the Will Smith backlash has officially died. He can still lead a profitable movie and attract millions of fans. So, it makes sense that Sony would love to keep him around for another film, and the studio knows exactly which one— “Resistor.”

According to Deadline, Will Smith is set to star in “Resistor,” a new sci-fi action film that is based on the novel “Influx” by author Daniel Suarez. Exact plot details aren’t known at this time, but if you go by what the book is about, the film will likely follow a physicist who creates a device that can reflect gravity. But instead of finding fame and fortune, he becomes the target of a covert organization that aims to hide massive scientific discoveries from the world.

As mentioned, there was a question about Will Smith’s starpower over the last year or so, after the actor slapped Chris Rock during the Oscars telecast. People were curious if the actor could still be a huge draw at the box office, especially in a climate where films are coming and going without much fanfare. Well, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” proved that Smith is still definitely a massive star.

There is no director attached to “Resistor,” and this likely won’t be Will Smith’s next project, but it’s clear that Sony is amped on this film and want to attract a filmmaker with some serious pedigree. Versions of the script have been written by Zak Olkewicz and Eric Singer.
