Of all the films released by DC in 2023, it was clear that “Blue Beetle” is the one James Gunn thought could continue on in his rebooted DCU. That said, the film had a dismal box office run, which led to many assuming that the franchise was DOA. However, it appears the “Blue Beetle” franchise is getting a second chance thanks to a forthcoming animated series.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. and DC Studios are developing a “Blue Beetle” animated series which is expected to continue the story where it left off in the film. It’s unclear how many people from the film’s cast will return to voice their characters in animation, and it’s unclear what the plot for the series might be.

For those who didn’t see the film, “Blue Beetle” follows the adventures of Jamie Reyes, a young man who gets a hold of a special scarab which turns into a hi-tech alien suit. It’s basically “Iron Man” but with a much younger lead and a Latino flair. The film stars Xolo Maridueña, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez.

Miguel Puga, who is best known for the animated series “The Casagrandes,” will serve as showrunner and director of the new animated series. Cristian Martinez is set to write the upcoming series. The film’s original director, Angel Manuel Soto, as well as the film’s writer, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, are returning as Executive Producers.

Obviously, it’s far too early to know when we might see “Blue Beetle” return in animated form, but for fans of the film, there’s now new life in the franchise.
