What makes communities stronger towards severe mental illnesses? People’s Palace Projects and the Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry invite you to a celebratory open lecture in honour of Dr Padmavati's conferment as an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), recognising her outstanding contributions to psychiatry and mental health research.

Dr Padmavati, one of India's most knowledgeable psychiatrists, has dedicated over 34 years to the Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF) in Chennai, India, where she serves as Director. She has spearheaded numerous ground-breaking initiatives in mental health research and has published dozens of articles. Her expertise encompasses epidemiological studies, drug trials, untreated schizophrenia, cultural aspects of psychosis, and metabolic disorders in mental illness.

With a profound passion for understanding the socio-cultural dimensions of mental illnesses, Dr Padmavati has conducted extensive research on the stigma surrounding mental health and physical comorbidities in schizophrenia. She has been instrumental in establishing the Department of Psychosocial Rehabilitation at SCARF, providing crucial psychosocial interventions tailored to individuals seeking treatment and rehabilitation services.

Recently, she has partnered with QMUL as a Co-Investigator on the PIECEs research , a 4-year programme funded by the NIHR that focuses on developing community-based strategies, including the arts, to address severe mental illnesses (psychosis) in India and Pakistan. At QMUL, the research is led by Professor Victoria Bird, Director of the Unit for Social And Community Psychiatry (Wolfson Institute of Population Health).

Don't miss the opportunity to hear Dr Padmavati share her insights and experiences on 30th July, from 12:00 to 1:20 pm at the Clark Kennedy Theatre (QMUL Whitechapel Campus).
