As Commander[]

Andred was Commander of the Chancellery Guard. (TV: The Invasion of Time) He did not care for Spandrell's successor as Castellan, Kelner, and ensured that his duties kept him away from his desk at the Castellan's suite of offices so as to avoid him. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Invasion of Time)

Andred arrested the Fourth Doctor due to his unauthorised TARDIS use and found himself attracted to Leela, (TV: The Invasion of Time) who was a far cry to the Time Ladies he met in the Capitol. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Invasion of Time) He became loyal to the Doctor after he declared himself President-elect and accompanied Leela to his induction ceremony, searching for her her escape when the Doctor ordered her expelled from the city. He looked inside the Doctor's TARDIS and was stunned by K9 Mark I.

When Andred awoke, the Vardans had taken over the Capitol. He began to raise a rebel force to kill the Doctor and attempted to assassinate him himself, but K9 stunned him and, when he came to, the Doctor explained that he was not a traitor. Andred worked with the Doctor, Leela, K9 and Rodan to defeat the Vardans and the Sontarans, after which Leela chose to remain on Gallifrey, as did K9, due to her feelings for him. Life with Leela[]

According to one account, Andred went on to become Castellan and sat on the Inner Council, (PROSE: Lungbarrow) although others say that he remained Commander. (AUDIO: Lies, etc.) He married Leela (TV: Arc of Infinity, etc.) and taught her how to use a staser. (AUDIO: Extermination) Following an incident in the Death Zone, Andred led a clean-up operation with K9 to dispose of the remaining creatures. (AUDIO: Time in Office)

According to some accounts, Leela became pregnant with Andred's child. (PROSE: Lungbarrow, Jealous, Possessive) K9 believed that Andred was unhappy due to this and told K9 Mark II that he had been "going around disconsolately, muttering, and shaking his head". (PROSE: Jealous, Possessive) According to most accounts, the couple did not have a child. (AUDIO: Weapon of Choice, etc.)

Andred told Leela stories about the Vampires and how Rassilon had killed them all. Leela enjoyed these stories. (AUDIO: Annihilation) He also told her about the transduction barrier, which he described as a moat. (AUDIO: Renaissance)

Andred learnt of a neo-conservative, isolationist movement and investigated its leaders, coming to believe that the Celestial Intervention Agency was involved. He contacted Narvin, pretending that his relationship with Leela had taught him the incompatibility of Time Lords and off-worlders, and arranged a meeting with him. (AUDIO: A Blind Eye)

Death[]

Andred arranged to meet with Narvin in the old city beneath the Capitol and lay in wait. He jumped out to attack Narvin but found that it was Torvald, with whom he entered into a shootout. He killed Torvald but, badly wounded himself, he regenerated into a new incarnation. (AUDIO: A Blind Eye)

Appearance[]

Andred was a "handsome young Time Lord". (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Invasion of Time)

Personality[]

Andred saw himself as a soldier and felt that it was his duty to serve the ruler of Gallifrey, going so far as to touch the butt of his staser as a threat when Kelner insulted and disobeyed the President-elect. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Invasion of Time) However, after the Vardans arrived, he decided to break his oaths and kill the Doctor. (TV: The Invasion of Time)

Andred was attracted to Leela due to her being more "vital and alive" than the Time Ladies of the Capitol. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Invasion of Time) Leela described this incarnation of her husband as "brave, kind [and] truthful". (AUDIO: Insurgency) When the Fourth Doctor gave him a yellow jelly baby to eat, Andred found it "delicious". The Doctor said that, if he liked jelly babies, he could not be all bad. (TV: The Invasion of Time)

Behind the scenes[]

• Christopher Tranchell has his first name billed as "Christopher" on-screen for The Invasion of Time parts one and two; and as "Chris" on-screen for parts three to six, and in Radio Times for all six episodes.
• At the end of Lungbarrow, the Seventh Doctor learns that Leela is carrying Andred's child. Noting that half-human, half-Gallifreyan is an "unusual pedigree", the Doctor tells her to "just call him after me". The implication is that the child will eventually travel back in time and become the Other, who ultimately dissolves himself in the Loom network to be reborn as the Doctor. Marc Platt later confirmed this: "I don't know whether anybody picked up on that little hint that this is actually a time loop! ... Yup! I'm very naughty! Leela and Andred are ... Oh, dear! Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned it? The implications are far too horrific to contemplate!" (DWM 305)
