Lavinia vs Kaalia EDH

So someone in our playgroup (all of us are pretty new to the format) is looking to build a optimized Kaalia of the Vast deck. And I already see it being a problem. Im looking for a deck that can compete and realized I pulled a Lavinia, Azorius Renegade . Do the cards dropped when Kaalia attacks get countered by Lavinia's since no mana is spent? Or since they being "put on the battle field attacking" they aren't cast and it doesn't trigger. Similarly are there any other commanders you suggest that may be better options as Lavinia is pretty limited? Thanks!!!

As to your second question, you might want to build a deck that messes with your opponent's hand so they don't have any Demons, Dragons, or Angels to hit you with.
For that you could use Tergrid, God of Fright Flip--then you can not only prevent your friend from playing their big stuff, you can take it for your own!

I do have a Nekusar deck that is my main deck so I could get that in there and try and tutor for it early. Good looks. Thanks!

There's also Containment Priest , Hallowed Moonlight , Gather Specimens . But by far I've found the best way to deal with Kaalia decks is to consistently remove Kalia.

As you perhaps came to realize, Kaalia of the Vast does not cast the creatures she cheats into play. Cards will explicitly mention if a card is being cast ("play" equates to cast, except when referring to lands). Therefore Lavinia, Azorius Renegade will not be able to counter the cards.
