Lands Tapping For Effect & Mana?

Asked by ICEMAN762004 9 years ago

If I have a card that gives lands and effect such as with Koth of the Hammer gives mountain cards the ability to tap and deal one damage. Do they still generate the mana associated with it as well as deal one damage or is that a one or the other kind of thing? Thanks in advance.

When a card has 2 effects that both require tapping it, you must choose which to use when you tap the card. However, if an effect says "when this card is tapped" then you get the effected you tapped for and the effect that triggers when tapped

So then for the purpose of the koth card then I would have to choose which effect?

Yes, because Koth's emblem gives lands a new ability that requires tapping you need to decide which tap ability you are using: Deal 1 Damage or gain 1 . Market Festival is an example of cards that will activate when the land is tapped normally

When you activate an ability, you announce the ability, put it onto the stack, make activation decisions for it (e.g., choosing targets), and pay its costs. After that point, you may retain priority an activate another ability (or cast a spell) or pass priority in an attempt to resolve the ability. You can't activate two abilities at once, and you can't use one payment to satisfy the costs of multiple abilities.

Therefore, you have to announce which ability you're activating. Once the activation process is complete, you are unable to activate the other ability because you cannot pay its cost.
