Do +1/+1 counters fall off when a creature stops being a creature?

Asked by vic 3 years ago

If I have a Kytheon, Hero of Akros  Flip that is flipped into Gideon, Battle-Forged and I activate his (please don't crucify me for assuming his gender) 3rd ability and turn him into a creature, and while in that mode I put a +1/+1 counter on him, will that counter go away at end of turn when he ceases to be a creature?

+1/+1 counters do not have a type restriction for what they can be on. So they will not fall off. They have no meaning on a planeswalker and will not do anything until you make Gideon a creature again, but will not be removed.

((The card refers to him as a guy on both faces though like?))

Counters in general stay on cards. You can't always put a certain counter on a certain card, but once it's there there's nothing to make it fall off if the card changes types.

As the previous posters mention, once the +1/+1 counters are placed on a creature, that permanent still retains those counters even if it stops being a creature. The counters just have no effect.

Another example to this would be the Theros gods. If you put +1/+1 counters on Erebos, God of the Dead and it ended up not being a creature any more due to losing devotion, Erebos, God of the Dead would still have the counters on him, but they would do nothing until he becomes a creature again. This is mentioned in the Oracle rulings.

From the Gatherer for Erebos, God of the Dead :

1/24/2020: Counters put on a God remain on it while it’s not a creature, even if they have no effect.
