Ugin, the Ineffable

Legendary Planeswalker — Ugin

Colourless Spells you cast cost less to cast.

+1: Exile the top card of your library face down and look at it. Create a 2/2 colourless Spirit creature token. When that token leaves the battlefield, put the exiled card into your hand.

-3: Destroy target permanent that's one or more colours.

Axis is your own effect, so it isn't affected by your own Hexproof (this is different than Shroud, see Lightning Greaves), unless you mean you run into that card a lot? If so then Axis won't be as consistent, but you could also consider running Soltari Visionary to blow up Enchantments.

One nice thing about Skullclamp is that you can always put it on your creature that is most likely to be killed, this at least nets you 2 cards if it happens (it also stacks with actual sacrifice effects since it doesn't kill the creature unless it has 1 toughness).

I can see you being iffy about Angel's Trumpet, but my theory was that with your Commander people are almost certainly going to try to swing at one another, because if they don't all their creatures are going to die and give you the only board. Meanwhile, those 1/1s have evasion, so even if most opponents will benefit from vigilance, your creatures might not care because they can still get in (and are then available to block). It might depend on how people in your area play, so no offense taken.

A few you might consider trimming are: Blight Herder, this is a lot of mana for very little value if you can't make the 1/1s. Ironclad Slayer seems like a poor fit to me, when I run stuff like this it's always in my opener! Do you have many cards that care about Ugin, the Ineffable's effect? 6 mana is an awful lot for this effect when Vindicate exists, and the tokens are pretty minor in Commander, I think you need to care about each of the abilities for Ugin to make sense. Is Relic Seeker in here just to find Dowsing Dagger? It seems like it'd be a challenge to actually achieve Renown with Seeker. All That Glitters is often a very strong card, but I'm not entirely convinced you have enough synergy to make it work, is Voltron really a good plan in this deck? Angelic Purge and Bone Shards are pretty 'meh' removal spells for an Orzhov deck, White has the best versatile removal effects by itself, to say nothing of Anguished Unmaking and Utter End, both of those are instants, and neither costs you a body (and both are more versatile). There is also Generous Gift in White, which lacks exile but hits anything. I don't love Celestial Judgement, aren't you likely to have a lot of 1/1s? It's great if you've got Cathar's Crusade out, but it can be pretty bad without it. Piercing Rays seems pretty unimpactful, it has too many limitations for a Sorcery speed effect that costs more than Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares. I don't like Acolyte's Reward, if you've got lots of White devotion surely you could just block?

Hope some of this helps!

Joslay131 +1 , forgot to before. Also, love that name!

Ugin, the Ineffable > Introduction to Annihilation/Karn - I'm assuming you're running Karn for artifact + enchantment removal, unless land decks are prevalent in the meta. Ugin can ramp out about 20% of your deck, can still remove enchantments (and some artifacts), create creatures and draw you cards. All for 1 less mana. Really depends on your meta/needs.

Profet93 I completely forgot about Ugin, the Ineffable! And he makes my expensive mana rocks that much cheaper, great shout, thank you!

Fair point about this not being close to cEDH, I more meant in vibes. That the strategy is to burst out of the gates, ramp, then tutor for the wincon (which comes out of nowhere like an infinite combo, even though it's not). I can't speak too much about it though because I never keep up with cEDH decks enough to know where the similarities are.

Ugin is going in, the only two targeted artifact removal spells I know of in mono black are Phyrexian Tribute and Gate to Phyrexia, I'll probably grab the cheaper of the two and toss it in there. The other thing I'm looking at is swapping the targeted creature removal, because a lot of it is sorcery speed, my Maybeboard has the instant speed versions I'm grabbing next time I go card shopping.

I would absolutely love to hear you recommendations! I don't love stax or infinite combos. At least, not easy infinite combos. I want Exquisite Blood in the deck for the life gain, but I won't get Sanguine Bond for example. If it takes some effort and thought to set up, I don't mind that. Similar for stax, I don't want to shut the game down for anyone, but I'm okay with making it a bit harder. For example, one of the decks I face the most in my pod is Gollum, Obsessed Stalker, which is completely shut down by both Archfiend of Despair and Plague Drone, both are in the deck, but they're creatures and easy to deal with. This was meant to be a mean deck but I'm a big ol' softie.

For budget, this is the deck I'm willing to spend on, I'm okay with a couple of $20 cards, or if you've got a lot of suggestions then let's say $5/card.

Again, thanks so much!

Thank you for your detailed reply. Based on your description of your decks and the meta which pilots similar decks, you're right, you do have those 2 choices. If you want to make it lower power, remove some ramp and increase your average cmc by adding cards with higher CMC. Personally, rather than power it down and not making it do what it's supposed to do, keep it as your higher powered, non cEDH deck. That way should you face against someone else, then you can stand your ground. That being said, I wouldn't spend too much $ on it, especially if you don't know how it performs in a stronger meta.

This deck is not close to cEDH level. cEDH decks have a smaller commander list, much lower average cmc and much more interaction. They have expensive, powerful cards, and adapt to their meta with a multitude of cards.

I'm unsure if you're aware but EDHREC is a great resource. You mention you want artifact / enchantment removal that doesn't destroy your stuff. Mono black doesn't have many options, I can list them all (if you want, lmk). For now, I believe your best bet is Ugin, the Ineffable. It's ramp for almost 20% of your deck, creates blockers/draw and can hit enchantments (and some artifacts). Another good idea which goes with the lifeloss is Feed the Swarm. If you need specific artifact hate, I have some as well.

I have more ideas for the deck but want your thoughts prior to providing additional suggestions so I know I'm going in the right direction. Do you like combos? Is stax/more control okay? $ per card you're willing to spend?

indieinside I respect your decision not to include those cards, understandable. Repeats can be boring. For potential cuts....

Vraska, Betrayal's Sting - Costs too much and no synergy with the deck. Profileration isn't a theme, creature to treasure is cool but not efficient removal. Ult is irrelevant.

Liliana of the Dark Realms - +1 is swamp tutor to hand, not even field. With all your card draw, I can't imagine this to be helpful. It's -3 is swamp based removal, you can get better instant speed removal for less mana. It's ult is great but takes 4 turns without taking damage to get there.

If you do want a PW, then Ugin, the Ineffable might be worth considering because it's ramp for almost 20% of your deck, it's removal for artifact/enchantments and draw/token generator that provides you with more bodies (To attack with or block).

At the cost of being winmore, Alhammarret's Archive?

Please let us know how Hatred ends up playing out for you, I can't wait to hear the stories! Pumping up an opposing commander for commander damage is also a fun (potentially political) tool!

Mystic Forge + Top + artifact cost reducer = Draw your deck. Forge is great "draw" so to speak as well.

Ugin, the Ineffable - "Draw", removal and ramp

Buried Ruin/Gerrard's Hourglass Pendant - Recursion

Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter/Vedalken Orrery - Flash. Might be anti-synergstic with the haste commander but mitigates over-extending and allows your "trigger each turn" card to trigger more often. Plus, isn't it cool to be like the blue player?

Maybe Strionic Resonator - Double attack and ETB's, also note Lithoform Engine for flexibility

Ghaileon +1 , void mirror + knowledge pool....that's one I haven't heard of. Note: You have your commander in your decklist, removing it allows you to get one more spot for one of the cards below....

Mystic Forge + Sensei's Divining Top + artifact cost reducer/Ugin, the Ineffable = Draw your whole deck

Basalt + forsaken = infinite

Basalt + Rings = infinite + top = Draw and cast your entire deck

Ancient Tomb - Ramp

Karn, the Great Creator + Lattice = Hard lock. Better than the void mirror + knowledge pool lock IMO as karn can act as artifact recursion (for the key pieces which will get exiled)

Everflowing Chalice (4 counters) + Voltaic Key + rings = infinite + top = draw your whole deck

Chromatic Orrery + Voltaic Key + rings = infinite

I had a couple questions regarding creature card choices like Cathodion, Chronomaton, Wall of Junk. Are these just cheap artifacts to increase your artifact count? Why not swap them out for something like Lightning Greaves which also add to your artifact count and protect your commander?

Gerrard's Hourglass Pendant - Recover from wipes. Also goes well with Emrakul, the Promised End should you wish to add an eldrazi as an alt wincon.

Looking forward to hearing your response, great deck. Makes me want to build one

Add Sensei's Divining Top to combo with basalt + rings to draw and cast your entire deck.

mystic forge + Cloud Key/Ugin, the Ineffable/Semblance Anvil/artifact cost reducer + sensei's divining top = Draw your entire deck

Sanctum of Ugin - Tutor
