Reflecting Pool

Land

: Add one mana of any type that a land you control could produce.

Path of Ancestry seems out of place in a creatureless deck? Otawara, Soaring City lose colors but gain unique removal.

Grand Coliseum comes into play tapped? Breaking your own rules. How is this better than Reflecting Pool?

Tarnished Citadel the worst rainbow land? You are running all of the dual lands in a 3 color deck. Seems unnecessary.

Swan Song is superior but you now have access Strix Serenade too.

Vanishing Verse really solid 2 mana removal. Answers a lot of potential problems this strategy might encounter.

Apart from a spate of tutors of varying price points (Vampiric Tutor, Mystical Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Entomb, etc.), here are some thoughts of varying degrees of evilness/making sure your opponents "love" you forever:

  1. Play 4 Reflecting Pool. Works great with Vivids and Primal Beyond. No need to play Prismatic Omen.
  2. Supreme Exemplar is not very good. It works only with Incandescent Soulstoke.
  3. Horde of Notions is the best card you have. You should be playing more of them, most likely 4. If one is answered, you drop a second one. If not answered, he'll overtake over the game.
  4. Play more lands. Your deck is mana hungry, and even with Smokebraider you always have expensive things to cast or activate Horde of Notions.
  5. I would replace one Island with Mystic Gate. You have white and blue spells with double mana and this filter will help you casting them.

  1. Considering that you play Ball Lightning, you should play a mana-base that is almost exclusively red. I suggest that you play 1 Swamp for situations when your opponent plays Path to Exile. Rest of the lands should be dual lands - Sulfurous Springs, Blackcleave Cliffs, Blightstep Pathway  Flip, Foreboding Ruins, Reflecting Pool.
  2. Thud could be replaced with Callous Sell-Sword. The disadvantage of Sell-Sword is that since it targets the creature, it can be killed in the response. Other than that, it's an advantage.
  3. Consider playing Witch's Mark instead of Thrill of Possibility. It's better against counter-spells, and if there is no benefit to play it as an instant, the Wicked role is a clear upside.

Thanks for taking a look fluffyeel !

  • You are spot on regarding mana. I've added a Reflecting Pool and a Scalding Tarn which should help. The new fetchable surveil lands look great for this deck given the graveyard synergies with caging.
  • Mana Crypt and Mana Vault are long term goals for the deck. With some luck we will have some reprints!
  • Commandeer looks like a ball of fun! I am a little worried about my blue card count here but there are several other decks it'll do very well in.
  • I'll have to give Displacer Kitten a try. It would go quite nuts with a haste source and a caged Gilded Lotus for instance. A cage off of Deflecting Swat and/or Fierce Guardianship would also be crazy.
  • Thanks also for the other recommendations. I've had great times with Fact or Fiction in the past, probably time to bust it out again. Force spiking everything with Patron Wizard would also be useful.

Stealing things and caging is fun: I've seen a lot of degenerate things with Mairsil. That said, I have a few small suggestions:

Hi Votecat,

  • Urza's Saga is amazing in silo but i'm hesitant to include it due to the deck being so demanding regarding colored mana. Sure I could tutor for Mox Diamond, but that depends on the number of lands I have in hand 3 turns from play. I think there is an argument for the Urza's Saga, just not a very compelling one. If I were to slot it in, i'd probably put it in for Volrath's Stronghold maybe.

  • Reflecting Pool - I could've sworn this was in the deck. This is a simple oversight. I'm probably going to cut one of the pain lands to make room. Which one would you cut?

  • Plaza of Heroes is a really cool card that I honestly didn't know existed. The unfortunate drawback is that this card is a little bit narrow in use due to it practically demanding that my Commander be in play in order to be useful. As great as this land is, I just don't find the argument for its inclusion that compelling. Less so than including Urza's Saga.

I always welcome a rebuttal - please let me know if you think i'm missing something.

What’s your reasoning for not running lands such as Urza's Saga, Reflecting Pool or Plaza of Heroes?
