Nine Lives

Enchantment

Hexproof

If a source would deal damage to you, prevent that damage to you, prevent that damage and put an incarnation counter on Nine Lives.

When there are nine or more incarnation counters on Nine Lives, exile it.

When Nine Lives leaves the battlefield, you lose the game.

Love the Nine Lives + Solemnity combo! Not only is it really good, but it has Oketra and a cat as its art!

It's not just you. WotC has been emphasizing active game progression recently, and defensive permanents, especially damage prevention, tend to lead to game stagnation. Generally, people want to be doing useful things instead of not doing useful things, and permanents that prevent them from doing useful things gives the game a perception of being less fun.

They haven't completely gone away. Blessed Sanctuary, Reidane, God of the Worthy  Flip, and Nine Lives are reasonably recent, and stun counters are probably going to fill out this space in the future.

danielgonmar: You need to use double square brackets around the card's name to make the link work - Nine Lives, Resourceful Defense

To answer your question, since Resourceful Defense only moves counters between things you control, the same player has to control both Nine Lives and the Defense in order to use the Defense to move counters off of Nine Lives. If they're controlled by different players, which might be the situation in the original question where things are being moved around with Harmless Offering, then it won't work.

Also, it's much better to post a new question as its own topic rather than respond to a very old one. With the way this site works, adding a new post to a Rules Q&A discussion doesn't move the topic to the top of the list. This topic is about 4 years old, so the only reason I was aware of your comment is because the site auto-subscribed me for notifications on this topic after I originally posted in it. If you had happened to post in a topic where the only people involved in the discussion were no longer active users then no one would have seen your question.

  1. Karmic Justice and Protector of the Crown are two cards I will be buying to replace Nine Lives and Bottled Cloister

  2. I stopped caring for budget and just focus on making sure it’s at the right power score I want it at, if I need a card that’s expensive I’ll pr0xy it

  3. Power level 8

  4. There’s like 20 prison cards in the deck so it’s on theme. Got my sleeves dripped out with the backs being the monopoly “go too jail” cards and the deck box being a 3d printed prison cage with its own lock

Icbrgr Bonecrusher Giant using the adventure half (stomp) stops damage from being prevented which gets around the Nine Lives part of the combo

@Pabs4444 the specific combo that sparked my concern is Nine Lives with Solemnity.

So far its something that I have only seen on Arena but I haven't been to the "LGS" that supports Pioneer in awhile because its almost an hour drive away from me... more or less I am just afraid of driving an hour to be met with that combo going off by Turn 4 repeatedly and then driving back home another hour super salty lol.

I currently don't think its a "popular" deck people are playing in paper but I could be wrong... I'm willing to just take the "L" for an occasional bad matchup but if this combo or similar like Deification and Gideon of the Trials become rampant then I guess I will very reluctantly splash for .

(But I would argue Nine Lives is the new version of those cards).

Usually, whenever I've seen Oloro played, his main win condition is a combo of some kind. I see you run a couple of the main pieces, but here are the ones to complete them:

Aetherflux Reservoir + Bolas's Citadel + Sensei's Divining Top gives infinite lifegain, lets you draw your entire library, then you can zap your opponents with Aetherflux Reservoir until you win.

Maralen of the Mornsong + Opposition Agent is a soft lockdown combo that turns off player draws, makes them lose life while giving you additional card advantage.

I see that you run the Sanguine Bond + Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose combo in the deck already. If you want a redundant effect for Vito that still works with that combo, Exquisite Blood has the same effect on an enchantment for an increased mana cost.

Decree of Silence + Solemnity makes it so that your opponents can't cast anything without it just being countered infinitely. Sure, if they have ways to cast something from outside their hand, it can still be cast, but that's why I like having some cards like Drannith Magistrate or similar effects in there as well.

Dovescape + Guile is a hilariously broken combo to run as well. Counter everything, get dove tokens equal to the CMC of anything anyone casts.

Azorius also has access to a bunch of hard lock out combos. Knowledge Pool + Lavinia, Azorius Renegade , Knowledge Pool + Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir , Omen Machine + Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir , the list goes on.

Solemnity combos with quite a few cards, since it lets you abuse anything that would usually put counters onto a permanent or player. Force Bubble, Phyrexian Unlife, Decree of Silence, Celestial Convergence, Glacial Chasm, Dark Depths and Nine Lives all come to mind.

Esper is a fun color to play with if you like being the guy to repeatedly and often screw over the table. Oloro allows you to run any shell you really like, gain life even without taking him out of the command zone, and convert his own lifegain into card draw while draining your opponents. If you really want to up the archenemy factor, Sen Triplets is another Esper creature that loves to mess with anyone you're playing with.
