Etrata, the Silencer

Legendary Creature — Vampire Assassin

Etrata, the Silencer can't be blocked.

Whenever Etrata deals combat damage to a player, exile target creature that player controls and put a hit counter on that card. That player loses the game if they own three or more exiled cards with hit counters on them. Etrata's owner shuffles Etrata into their library.

legendofa on Assassin's Creed? Ugh, fine.

I was pretty skeptical of the historical figures as cards at first, but I realized I spent a good amount of time murdering historical people and razing historical cities in the Age of Empires and Civilization series, so there's not really a difference for me there. Plus, Portal Three Kingdoms covers a lot of the same ground. I think the flavor's fine, at least no worse than some of the planes from the Doctor Who Planechase set--Pompeii, Besieged Viking Village, Prime Minister's Cabinet Room...

For me, this is simply another kinda interesting-looking Universes Beyond where I don't know the source material enough to talk about it. I'm expecting Mari, the Killing Quill + Etrata, the Silencer + Ramses, Assassin Lord to come out of the woodworks. Dimir, Esper, or Grixis Assassins. (That's not exactly a hot take, people have been talking about this for months, but it's pretty clear with the full set reveal.)

I'm also down on the Rogue subtheme, to make Mari, the Killing Quill work. Even wanted to make Etrata, the Silencer work, with the "3 hit counters and you lose" ability. But to much hassle to win, esp. in my powercrept playgroup. But, I am revisiting Bitterblossom for that rogue-subtheme reason. What's your take on Bitterblossom, for not including it in your list? It keeps you from the throne, has evasive rogue tokens, and therefore synergizes well with other cards in your list (e.g. Oona's Blackguard).

My most updated list MTBR isn't on TappedOut, but I'm still following your primer, since I've always liked your expertise on this commander.

My thoughts on this set:

Melira, the Living Cure should've been able to remove poison counters even if the ability was similar to Leeches.

All Will Be One and Soul-Scar Mage together just turned a lot of cheap cards pinging all creatures on the battlefield into board wipes. And if you happen to have Bonfire of the Damned to cast you could end up winning the game.

I know the stories explained it, but I would love to had seen cards explaining how Lukka and Nissa were compleated. Though compleating Nissa kinda irks me because the story she was in in The Brothers War implied she survived the war with New Phyrexia.

Nahiri, the Unforgiving and Bladegraft Aspirant could end up vital in Boros reconfigure decks.

I like Corrupted. A good way to take advantage of poison without directly using it to win. Vishgraz, the Doomhive is the poison Commander we deserve.

Only sacrifice to draw a card?? 5 of the Sphere lands feel underwheling compared to the rest.

If you are building a oil counter deck for an eternal format, make sure to add Nesting Grounds to the deck.

In Superfriends decks, Ichormoon Gauntlet and Kasmina, Enigma Sage together could result in multiple -12 activations in a turn.

With Vraska a primarily black Planeswalker and Tyvar also a Planeswalker, it fits that she got the monoblack card. Anyone else notice the similarities between the ultimates of Vraska, Betrayal's Sting and Vraska, Relic Seeker?

As happy as I am Terramorphic Expanse got reprinted into Standard, I think Evolving Wilds would've made for a more flavorful choice.

Thrun was declared the last Troll BEFORE the Phyrexians rose. So what's with Oil-Gorger Troll?

Kaito, Dancing Shadow should be a staple in Etrata, the Silencer decks.

One more assassin that may interest you, works nicely with Ramses and also is a card that fills that 'take out a player' role - Etrata, the Silencer

Slashdance

Glen Elendra Archmage is already in my list. I don't think I have anything that outright wins the game with the GEA and Mikaeus combo at the moment, but that's just personal preference. It would be easy to sub in Goblin Bombardment or etc to make it work though.

Etrata, the Silencer is too narrow and slow of a card for me in most situations I think. Similarly, as alexjustdoit pointed out, Nautiloid Ship requires a bit too many hoops for my tastes. You need: an opponent with decent cards in their grave, 3 power to crew it with, to hit with it, and then obviously 4 mana to play it in the first place. Ultimately I think it's also suffering from being a bit too slow / bulky of a card for most games.

Could Etrata, the Silencer be a useful addition as an assassin? Could even be an alternate wincon, since Mari, the Killing Quill exiles cards with a hit counter. Three of those and an Etrata hit would mean 'game over'. Etrata herself could easily be sacced on the combat trigger and return to the battlefield.

Hi m8,

This deck looks very nice. I'm using Etrata, the Silencer and Phage the Untouchable in mine as alternative (yanky) wincons. I also really like using Thalakos Seer because of his 'when leaving the battlefield' trigger.

I need to put Satoru Umezawa in here. There's a few cards he could help ninjutsu in: Etrata, the Silencer, Silent-Blade Oni...but I keep forgetting that he's more than just a ninjutsu enabler. I just dunno what to trade out for him...
