Operation Medic Bag: Update #20 – Trip Laser

+ + + + +

Hello, heisters! This is Miodrag “Mio” Kovačević, game director on PAYDAY 3, and today Id like to talk to you about the trip laser, our new tool that’s coming in a future update.

The trip laser (name subject to change) is a new marking tool meant for both loud and stealth gameplay. As the name implies, it is a laser that you place on any non-NPC surface (but it’s not a mine, so it won’t explode - we’ll save that for the future). Once any NPC walks through the laser, whether they’re a hostile or a civilian, they will become marked for 10 seconds (this time scales with abilities like the Strategist base and aced skills).

The laser itself is 3 meters long, but will not go through any solid surfaces, so walls will block it. If there is no surface within the 3 meter range, it will fade out after its max range, but still function within it.

While players will only have access to one trip laser, it is compatible with the Scrambler line’s “Full Recall,” so you can use it to move it around. And since it has infinite charges, unlike the motion sensor, you can move it around as much as you please. It synergizes well with the Assassin and Strategist skill lines, too, so we’re confident it will be a good part of many builds.

Speaking of the motion sensor, while we believe that these two tools have their distinct uses as well as advantages and disadvantages, we still realize that the motion sensor might fall behind for loud gameplay, especially in heists with strong chokepoints. To mitigate that, we’ll also be increasing the charges of the motion sensor from 15 to 30.

The trip laser is a free update, and can be unlocked by all players. We hope it helps you round out your marking builds. With this tool, we feel that marking builds have enough options to shine now and we’ll be giving other archetypes some love in the future.

Editor’s Note

Hi, heisters; first of all, a big thanks to Mio for helping out with this week’s blog! It turned out great, as always.

We do have a few things we need to address ahead of the summer. Namely, holidays. As you’ve probably noticed by now, the team has been working hard to improve the game and make new content since launch, and it’s time for a well-earned break. This means that we are not going to be releasing a content update July, instead having two chonky updates ready for August and September. (2 DLCs, 1 free heist and “more” for those who’ve been paying attention)

Vacation doesn’t mean we’ll be completely silent though! Twitterman gets no time off, so feel free to check in there for… whatever that is. But! We’ve also planned several events and other fun stuff, listed here:

  • A Community Event with mask rewards
  • A new Twitch drop (in addition to the one running now)
  • PAYDAY 3 Roadmap release
  • New Gateway Report articles
  • Dragan Files updates (pw: freshfish)
  • Almir will be streaming on Twitch and YouTube on Tuesdays and Thursdays as usual but will complement that with streaming from his own channel daily for the month of July, so check in!
  • More blog posts
