Intakes,[1] also known as cooling intakes[2] or cooling vents, were crucial components used in engines[1] and weapons.[3]
On sublight drives, such as the Hoersch-Kessel ion drive, the intakes had to be in precise alignment with the firing cells for maximum efficiency, and had to be maintained on a regular basis. Four intakes were used on Quadex's Kyromaster engine, divided by splitter plates, to dissipate heat exhaust.[1] Airspeeders also utilized intakes, such as the large cooling intake underslung on the fuselage of the Talon I combat cloud car.[2]
Intake mechanisms were also used on jetpacks to pull atmosphere into the device's ignition chamber where it mixed with fuel to produce thrust. Intake mechanisms also worked in conjunction with exhaust vanes to control the flight of the jetpack.[4]
Cooling vents were present on blasters; on the DH-17, the cooling vents were behind the barrel of the gun. On the DL-44, the air cooling vent was positioned in front of the trigger mechanism.[3]
