Pre-play: Understanding the Basics of Brawl Stars

Brawl Stars combines a Hero shooter and a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA.) You control characters known as Brawlers. The game's controls are streamlined. The left-hand side of the screen is the movement, and the right-hand side shows two buttons: the left button is for the Super ability, and the right button is for the Basic Attack. Basic Attacks charges your brawler's Super which is essential to taking advantage during duels and consumes ammo that depletes after a few shots. The ammo reload is like a cooldown and takes some time to complete its reload cycle.

Let’s get started: Game Modes

The objective of Brawl Stars depends on the chosen game mode. For example, the classic Solo Showdown mode pits ten players in either a free-for-all deathmatch or with five teams of two players in Duo Showdown. Here are some other game modes to explore:

  • In Gem Grab, you play in two teams of three players to get 10 Gems and secure them for 20 seconds to win.
  • Brawl Ball is a similar three versus three (3v3) game mode inspired by soccer. Score two points against the opposing team to win the match.
  • Bounty puts players in a headhunt for those who have a bounty, denoted by a star on top of them. The first to reach 20 points in two minutes wins the match.
  • Heist involves breaking the vault of the opposing team. The vault must be destroyed or have the lowest health to win. The game ends in a draw if neither vault is damaged nor destroyed.
  • Hotzone is Brawl Star's equivalent of a capture-the-point game mode. Each occupied zone expands in territory and affects the other zones. The team with the most zone percentage wins.
  • Knockout is a team deathmatch game mode where players must duke it out in a best-of-three rounds match. Once a player is eliminated, they will respawn in the next round.
  • There is also a competitive mode called the Power League, where players compete at the highest level to earn rank, played in a three versus three format.
  • Club League lets players form Clubs that compete twice a month for rank and excellent rewards.

Brawl Pass

Brawl Pass is the battle pass system of Brawl Stars. It is available in two paths: the free path which all players can get rewards, and the premium Brawl Pass, which gives more rewards like a new brawler, skins, pins, sprays, additional Coins, Power Points, and Credits.

Currency

There are plenty of in-game currencies used in Brawl Stars - you need to know how to spend each type. This section lists the different currencies and where to spend them:

  • Coins - Use to upgrade brawlers, along with Power Points.
  • Credits - Use to unlock brawlers when their Credit limit is reached. Credit limit scales depending on the rarity of the brawler.
  • Power Points - Use to upgrade brawlers, along with Coins.
  • Gems - Use to upgrade brawlers and buy items from the Shop like skins. It can be purchased with real money.
  • Bling - Use to buy skins, sprays, pins, and other cosmetic items from the Shop.

Know your Brawlers

The different Brawlers in this game are assigned a class. Brawl Stars has seven brawler classes: Artillery, Assassin, Controller, Damage Dealer, Marksmen, Support, and Tank. Each class has its strengths and weaknesses. Let's dive into the different brawler classes.

  • Artillery - This class can throw and shoot projectiles and may deal an area of effect damage. They have a slow firing rate and reload speed. Works well against Marksmen. Weak against Tanks and Assassins.
  • Assassin - High burst damage output and very good at ambushing opponents. They have low HP, which makes them weak against defensive classes like Tanks and Damage Dealers. They are strong against Artillery and Marksmen.
  • Controller - They deal area of effect (AoE) damage which controls the map. Suitable for team games like Hotzone. Strong against Support. Weak against Marksmen, Artillery, and Assasin.
  • Damage Dealer - Combines the high damage output of Assassin and the high HP of Tank. Strong against Assassin and Tank. Weak against Artillery and Marksmen.
  • Marksmen - High damage output but have a slow rate of fire and reload speed. They must be used in long-distance engagements. Strong against Damage Dealer and Tank. Weak against Artillery and Assassin.
  • Support - Provides buffs and heals. Perfect for teams. Low damage output and HP make them unsuitable for solo matches. Strong against Artillery. Weak against Assassin, Damage Dealer, Marksmen, and Tank.
  • Tank - Defensive frontliners that deal massive damage in close combat. Strong against Assassin, Artillery, and Marksmen. Weak against Damage Dealer.

Upgrade your Brawler

An essential game mechanic of Brawl Stars is the upgrades players give to their favorite brawlers. Upgrading brawlers gives them the necessary boosts to base damage (and bonus damage, if applicable), HP, and Super attack. Upgrade points, called "Power Points," can be obtained through drops and the Brawl Pass. Since Power Points are shared among all brawlers, knowing how to spend them wisely is essential. Spend it on the brawler you use the most and your second option. Brawlers can be upgraded until Level 11.

Bonus Tips and Tricks

Now you’re getting the hang of it, it’s time to level-up. Here are some pointers that will propel you from a rookie to a Brawl Star legend.

  • Know the properties of your brawler's basic and Super attacks. For example, Nita has a fan-shaped area of damage for her basic attack, which can be helpful for multiple targets within her range. And her Super, Overbearing, hunts players even if they are hiding in the bushes. This is very useful for 1v1 situations.
  • Hide in the bushes. You can camp in the bushes peppered throughout the stage and prepare for an ambush. However, there are better strategies in the early game. To maximize this, earn enough eliminations or damage to charge your Super attack and then hide in the bushes to catch opponents off-guard with your Super attack.
  • Destroy those boxes. Boxes provide Power Cubes in Solo Showdown. Power Cubes add to your 400 to your max HP and boost to attack speed and health recovery.
  • Know when to attack. Since the ammo of brawlers is limited, with varied reload speeds, it is necessary to know when to commit to an engagement. You can camp in the bushes to gain momentum.
  • Upgrade Smartly: Use Power Points to boost your brawler's damage, health, and Super attack. Allocate points based on your gameplay preferences and strategies.
  • Beware of the poison cloud. In Solo Showdown, the poison cloud adds tension to the match. When caught in it, it deals damage to the brawler.
  • Remember to upgrade your brawler.
  • In 3v3 modes, stick with your team. You will never know when your attack becomes the saving grace for the team.
  • Have a clear idea of matchups against every role. This will come in handy when you are going to climb the ranks.
  • Try to maximize the map. When in unfavorable situations, know where to escape. If some obstacles or bushes can benefit you, use them.
