Advocacy Incubator

The Open Climate Campaign supports and amplifies the global advocacy efforts by communities calling for open access to climate research. The Open Climate Campaign also provides a shared area of focus for open access advocacy efforts that are calling for immediate access to publicly funded research. We advocate for The right of every human being to have access to scientific knowledge and participate in its development  (Article 27.1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) without geographical or financial constraints.

Our Advocacy
Agenda

Meeting the Sustainable Development Goals

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) all require open practices, policies, and access to be achieved. Open science is fundamental in collaboration and equitable innovation, ensuring that everyone has access to the knowledge that is required to meet the SDGs. With a focus on climate action (SDG 13) and with the spirit of meeting fostering partnership for the goals (SDG 17), the Open Climate Campaign, a partnership between Creative Commons, SPARC, and EIFL, is working to make all climate research (and thereby all research required to meet the other goals) available as open access.

Prioritizing Diamond Open Access

Access to climate change and biodiversity research is one of the most important open access priorities of our time. The Open Climate Campaign calls for immediate unrestricted open access to climate change and biodiversity research to help solve the climate crisis. We believe that supporting the Diamond Open Access model, where research is made available with no fees to the reader or the author, is one of the most important actions we can take in the OA movement for the future of the world. Diamond OA for climate research will lead to increased equitable collaboration in finding faster solutions to the climate crisis. Open access paths that are inequitable are inherently at odds with the open movement.

Prioritizing climate change and biodiversity research within OA efforts

We believe that the Campaign’s singular focus on open access to climate change and biodiversity research is our greatest strength. Open access to all climate change and biodiversity research will contribute to a robust open knowledge commons which helps to address the information crisis, fight dis/misinformation, and better inform policy making. It will also support an acceleration in the systemic shift in scholarly communications that is sustainable, equitable, and community-driven.

Our Advocacy
Agenda

Bibliometrics Research

One of our main Campaign objectives is to conduct an open access review of climate and biodiversity research. We work with bibliometric experts to track the percentage of open vs closed climate science and biodiversity research. We also use these tools to identify seminal climate and biodiversity research in order to prioritize our efforts in advocating for that research to be open. We publish our findings on our homepage and regularly share updates on progress toward 100% open access for climate change research.

Talks & Trainings

The Open Climate Campaign is overseen by a team of research and scholarly communications experts. We regularly participate in events, conferences, and workshops all over the world to discuss Campaign priorities, provide training on open access and open science, and give expert advice to institutions and organizations who wish to develop and implement strong open access policies with the climate in mind. Take a look at our upcoming and recent events. Invite the Open Climate Campaign to your next event by contacting us.

International Frameworks

We identify and contribute to international frameworks to include open access policy recommendations.
