Rockstar’s GTA trilogy hits 30m downloads on Netflix

The three GTA remasters released through Netflix have now been downloaded over 30m times, according to Appmagic data compiled by mobilegamer.biz.

Rockstar’s remastered PS2-era trio GTA: San Andreas, GTA: Vice City and GTA III were released through Netflix on December 14 2023, and had racked up over 18m downloads combined by the end of January.

Appmagic estimates suggest San Andreas is the lead title of the three GTA games by some distance, with 20.5m downloads to date. Vice City has 6.5m installs so far, and GTA 3 has 3.3m. The three games combined add up to 30.3m downloads through Netflix, by far the biggest game series released through the streaming service to date.

From last week: ‘Netflix Games boss Mike Verdu moves aside to set up new “games innovation” team‘.

iOS dominates the platform split. San Andreas has been downloaded an estimated 15.8m times on Apple devices, with just 4.7m players on Android. 4.9m players installed Vice City through the App Store, with 1.6m via Google Play. GTA 3, meanwhile, has been downloaded an estimated 2.4m times on iOS and has 929k installs on Android.

The market split predictably shows the US top by some distance for each game. 25% of San Andreas downloads are from the US, with Brazil on 11%, India and Mexico on 8% and the UK on 4%.

Vice City estimates show 23% of installs from the US, with India on 18% and Brazil, Turkey and the UK on 5% each. 25% of GTA 3 installs were from the US, with India on 12%, Brazil on 6% and  Mexico and the UK on 5%.

From last week: ‘Netflix Games’ Leanne Loombe on GTA, content strategy, IAPs, big screen games and more‘.

GTA’s 30m landmark comes at a fascinating time for Netflix’s games efforts. The streaming giant confirmed last week that it is seeking a new games boss, with former games lead Mike Verdu moving over to start up a new “games innovation” team at the streaming giant.

VP and head of external games at Netflix Leanne Loombe also told us last week about its plans to add greater personalisation to its games offering. She added that the streamer’s ultimate goal is to create games of all genres for players of all demographics, and make them playable on any screen.

Last month, we looked at the top Netflix game downloads to date, according to Appmagic. Rockstar’s GTA: San Andreas was clearly out in front, followed by Annapurna’s Storyteller and Tilting Point’s SpongeBob: Get Cooking.
