The Anti-Aging Benefits of Microgreens
Stefani, S., and D.E Andayani. “Anti Aging Benefits Of Microgreens”. Journal of Medicine and Health , vol. 4, no. 2, Aug. 2022, pp. 190-02, doi:10.28932/jmh.v4i2.3887.
Aging, a process defined by the gradual loss of tissue and organ functionality, is partly due to the build-up of oxidative stress. The application of antioxidant therapy may mitigate oxidative stress and deter premature aging.
Microgreens, rich in vitamins and phytochemicals, exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The goal of this literature review is to investigate the nutritional constituents of microgreens and their impact on aging. The methodology employed a comprehensive literature review of works published in the last decade up until 2021, highlighting the anti-aging benefits of microgreens.
The study revealed that microgreens boast a higher concentration of vitamins and phytochemicals compared to their fully matured counterparts. They specifically contain vitamins A, C, and E, along with polyphenols, all known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, suggesting potential benefits for slowing the aging process.
Despite these promising findings, the current understanding of microgreens’ anti-aging properties remains limited. Further research is warranted to delve deeper into the influence of the vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals present in different types of microgreens on health and their potential as anti-aging agents, particularly in vivo studies.
Microgreens are not only nutritionally rich but also readily accessible, making them a potential boon to daily diets and an exciting area for scientific research. Their high content of beneficial vitamins and phytochemicals might be leveraged in strategies for improving health, particularly in age-related health challenges. This is important, given the increasing aging population and the desire to maintain health and vitality in later life stages.
While the preliminary results are promising, there is still much to learn about the potential anti-aging benefits of microgreens. Advancing this knowledge will require targeted research, a deeper understanding of the aging process, and continued exploration of the potent compounds these tiny but powerful plants contain.
