Memory Alpha
Help Contents → Preferences

The Preferences special page allows you to personalize some aspects of MediaWiki. The preferences you set will only apply when you are logged in. Memory Alpha also has some recommended changes to your preferences.

To change your preferences, hover over the icon furthest to the bottom left (desktop) or upper right (mobile) corner of the screen and click on the "My Preferences" button in the drop-down menu; or, go directly to Special:Preferences.

User profile[]

Basic information[]

This section displays your username, a list of user groups to which you belong, your total number of edits on Memory Alpha, and your time of registration. None of these can be modified by the user. In addition, a link allowing you to access all of your account data on Memory Alpha is displayed, as well as a link to reset all preferences to their defaults, an option to change you Fandom password, a link allowing you to connect other accounts to your Fandom account, and an option to setup 2-factor authentication.

You are able to link your Fandom account with one account from each of the following services: Facebook, Google, Twitch, and Apple.

Internationalization[]

In this section, you can select your desired display language; note that this defaults to "en - English" on the English language version of Memory Alpha. You can also select your pronoun preference here (either he, she, or they), which are used in some scripts to refer to a user.

Signature[]

This section displays your existing signature as well as a box that allows you to create a custom signature. For more information on signatures, see Signature.

Email options[]

You may optionally register your email address (it will not be shown publicly on the site). This will enable you to reset your password by clicking the "Mail me a new password" box on the sign in screen, if you forget it. Your email address is also used to alert you of new messages or edits to pages you are following, if you select the appropriate settings (see below). You can also change an existing email address to a new one in this section.

If you do choose to register your email address, a validation email will be sent to the address provided. After your email address has been validated, you will see a message such as "Your email address was confirmed on 2011 October 11 at 10:18." under the "change email address" button.

Appearance[]

This section allows you to select whether you see all ads or a more limited number, where you land when you first enter Memory Alpha (Main Page, Recent Changes, or Community Feeds), and the category page layout format (dynamic or classic categories).

Notifications[]

Email notifications for all wikis[]

The options in this section cause an email to be generated whenever any of the selected events occur. In order to use this feature, you have to have previously registered and verified your email address (see above). Once the email address has been validated, you can choose to be emailed when:

  • a page or a file on your watchlist is changed;
    • also for minor edits;
  • your user talk page is changed;
  • a Weekly Digest of changes to your followed Fandom pages is available;
  • someone upvotes one of your Discussions posts or replies;
  • someone replies to a Discussions post you follow;
  • your username is mentioned in a post or reply; and/or
  • Fandom has news and events.

Unsubscribe from all emails for all wikis[]

Enabling this option disables all emails from Fandom, overriding all other options.

Email notifications for this wiki only[]

Similar to the section above, the options in this section cause an email to be generated whenever any of the selected events occur on Memory Alpha. In order to use this feature, you must be an admin with a verified email address (see above). If you qualify, you can choose to be emailed when:

  • someone edits Memory Alpha;
  • there's a daily email telling me how many times Memory Alpha was viewed; and/or
  • there's a daily digest of activity on Memory Alpha.

Appearance[]

Skin preferences[]

In this section, you can set the theme (light, dark, or wiki preset) you wish to view Memory Alpha through. There is also an option in this section to enable or disable personal JavaScript.

This section allows you to set the layout for viewing pages on MA: you can set the width to fixed or expanded and the right rail to visible or hidden.

This section allows you to set the format of the displayed date and time on various pages.

  • Don't show diff after performing a rollback

Advanced options[]

Featured Video[]

This section contains settings for viewing videos:

  • Show all videos; or
  • Don't show all videos.

Editing[]

General options[]

This section allows you enable or disable section editing by right clicking on section titles and page editing on double click, as well as giving you the option to choose between using Fandom keyboard shortcuts or MediaWiki shortcuts.

Editor[]

This section allows you to configure the font style of the edit area (either the default font of the browser you're using, a monospaced font, a sans-serif font, or a serif font) and your preferred editor (VisualEditor, source editor, or VisualEditor - source mode) as well as a number of other editing options. On Memory Alpha, the default editor should always be the source editor, and this should not be modified. For more information, see Editing. The other options in this section are:

  • mark all edits minor by default;
  • prompt me when entering a blank edit summary (or the default undo summary);
  • warn me when I leave an edit page with unsaved changes;
  • do not show link suggest in Source mode;
  • use the wikitext mode inside the visual editor, instead of a different wikitext editor;
  • temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta; and
  • enable the editing toolbar.

Preview[]

  • Show preview when starting to edit
  • Show preview before edit box
  • Show previews without reloading the page

Accessibility[]

  • Enable colorblind-friendly scheme for syntax highlighting when editing wikitext

Editing experience[]

If you have disabled the VisualEditor, this section allows you to hide the category module, which is the box in the category list at the bottom of pages that allows for the addition of new categories to a page without opening the editor. Memory Alpha strongly recommends that this option be checked, disabling the category module.

Recent changes[]

Display options[]

In this section, you can set the number of days to show in recent changes (up to a maximum of ninety) and the number of edits to show in recent changes, page histories, and in logs, by default (up to a maximum of one thousand).

Advanced options[]

This section has the following options:

  • group changes by page in recent changes and watchlist; and
  • use non-JavaScript interface (loads recent changes and related changes without filtered search or the highlighting functionality.)

Changes shown[]

This section allows you to hide minor edits from Recent Changes and, for admins, hide patrolled pages from new page list.

Watchlist[]

Edit watchlist[]

In this section you can edit entries on your watchlist, either by editing the raw watchlist or viewing the existing watchlist with an option of removing any entries from the list. You can also clear the whole watchlist from here.

Display options[]

Here you can set the number of days to show in your watchlist (up to a maximum of ninety days) and the maximum number of changes to show (up to a maximum of one thousand).

Advanced options[]

  • Expand watchlist to show all changes, not just the most recent
  • Add direct unwatch/watch markers (×/+) to watched pages with changes (JavaScript required for toggle functionality)
  • Use non-JavaScript interface (Loads watchlist without filters search or highlighting functionality.)

Changes shown[]

  • Hide bot edits from the watchlist
  • Hide my edits from the watchlist
  • Hide edits by anonymous users from the watchlist
  • Hide edits by logged in users from the watchlist

  • Add pages and files I edit to my watchlist
  • Add pages and files I move to my watchlist
  • Add pages and files I delete to my watchlist (admins only)
  • Add pages I create and files I upload to my watchlist
  • Add pages where I have performed a rollback to my watchlist (admins only)
  • Add new files I upload to my watchlist

Token[]

Here you can see and reset the secret key for your account that can access the Web feed of your watchlist.

Note that anyone who knows the key will be able to read your watchlist, so do not share it.

Search[]

This section allows you to set the number of search results to display on each page when you search on Memory Alpha, with an upper limit of five hundred.

Gadgets[]

In this section you can enable various "gadgets" which implent a range of CSS and JavaScript files created by Memory Alpha users to improve the site's interface and functionality. We recommend you look through the gadgets and select any you think would be useful for you.
