We seek to embed sustainable practices into WordPress to ensure the longevity of the project.

To do so, we focus our efforts on the 3 pillars of sustainability:

Social: Finding ways to increase the diversity and wellbeing of the WordPress community.

Environmental: Reducing energy and waste consumption in the development and usage of the WordPress software and its community activities.

Economical: Finding ways to economically support contributions to the WordPress Project, for those who need it.

WordPress Sustainability PluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party supported by the WP Sustainability Team. There are other issues that may require our attention right now:

Our participation as a Team in the Mentorship program. How could we attract and guide the new contributors? What can we do? How can we explain them what we do and how can they help the team? You can follow up the topic and leave your thoughts here.
Share feedback on the direction of the Five for the Future. We can discuss anything during the meeting, but we encourage everybody to leave their suggestions and thoughts directly in the post for keeping the conversation alive, accesible and organized.
Sustainability Team Badges. Which ones we should have and how they would be obtained.

First off we don’t need to reference the Roadmap Canvas in public facing posts and discussions (it’s helpful to coordinate across teams and contributors in SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/.). The Channel Canvas (which is enabled by default and easily accessible) should be helpful for newcomers and even long time members who might have forgotten what our team is all about and how to contribute…

…especially until available contributors (led my our representatives) can devise a plan to work through the admin tasks which should make the onboarding and collaboration experience more clear and obvious.

Main reason I keep bringing this up is a few team members are making good progress working with the Community Working Group on the two programs aligned with our goals (Mentorship program and Five for the Future) but we need to do a better job raising awareness (in our channel and across the community) and getting more folks involved.

These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party is an interesting initiative, but how do you plan to address the objections made to existing tools for estimating CO2eq emissions, especially as there is as yet no consensus? Wouldn’t it be more responsible not to use figures that, while satisfactory, are necessarily misleading and potentially detrimental to the original goal?

These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party is to spread awareness about digital sustainability. That may include a deep dive (using proper references and links) into the uncertainties as well, for the ones who want to learn more. While I agree with a lot of things mentioned in the post you share, estimating website emissions the way it is being done now, still seems for me a valuable way to spread awareness. You’re right that exact figures may not be the best way. That said, the thing I like most about the website carbon calculator is always the fact that it compares web pages, making absolute figures less important. Nowadays, they use a scale, similar to physical devices’ energy efficiency, to classify web pages.
  
  I would like to argue as well that with such a plugin we’d have one clear advantage over carbon calculators that measure front-end data for all kinds of websites: we would be measuring (and comparing?) WordPress websites only. With all the other technical data that is available within Site Health, it could even be a possibility to dive deeper or, perhaps, an interesting way to compare WP sites or to correlate things.
