The Biggest TV Shows Coming In 2024

With the age of streaming came the near impossibility of watching or even knowing about every show that comes out in a given year. In 2022 there were 599 shows, with 2023 seeing even more releases across streaming and network television. The fact that is objectively too many shows notwithstanding, we’re here to help you parse through the bloated release schedule with the biggest shows coming in 2024. 

Next year will bring plenty of returning faces across your favorite franchises, and hopefully we’ll see a couple exciting originals crop up as the year unfolds. In the meantime, here’s what you can expect out of 2024. 

Echo 

Releasing January 9 on Disney+

Marvel’s Echo will be the first of Marvel’s “Spotlight” collection. On paper, the Spotlight series is meant to be “self-contained, character-driven stories that new fans can enjoy without watching other Marvel content.” Realistically, there are plenty of other Marvel properties without this branding that fit the same bill — not to mention that Echo will follow the titular character who was introduced and played a considerable role in Hawkeye. 

Pointless labeling aside, Alaqua Cox had a solid outing in Hawkeye and we’re excited to see more of her character in the new year. And yes, Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) are both confirmed to return in the series. 

Unlike most other MCU shows, Echo will be dropping all five episodes at once upon its release on January 9.

Hazbin Hotel 

Releasing January 19 on Prime Video

If you’ve been waiting for A24 and Prime Video to team up on adult animation, well… that’s weirdly hyper-specific but now is your moment! Vivienne “VivziePop” Medrano’s cult-favorite web series is making its way to your TV screens in the new year.

The series follows Charlie Morningstar, princess of Hell, as she works to help rehabilitate demons and send them along to heaven after she learns that angels come down to her father’s domain and purge (read: kill) demons once a year to solve the overpopulation problem. Oh, and did we mention that it’s a musical?

Hazbin Hotel stars Erika Henningsen as Morningstar, Stephanie Beatriz as her girlfriend Vaggie, as well as Jeremy Jordan, Blake Roman, Amir Talai, Keith David, Alex Brightman, Kimiko Glenn, Joel Perez, and Christian Borle.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith 

Releasing February 2 on Prime Video

Phoebe Waller-Bridge may have exited the project over creative differences, but the Mr. and Mrs. Smith television series carries on. Now helmed by Francesca Sloane and star Donald Glover, the show will be a reboot of the 2005 film of the same name.

Despite a slightly rocky creative process behind the scenes, the whispers around the show are encouraging. Maya Erskine will star as Jane Smith alongside Glover’s John.

Prime Video will be dropping Mr. and Mrs. Smith all at once, so you’ll be able to binge at your leisure. 

Abbott Elementary Season 3

Releasing February 7 on ABC

The writers and actors strikes pushed filming back several months, but Abbott Elementary is set to return pretty much on-schedule despite the delay. Of course, “on schedule” in this case really just means around the same time that it aired last year. Either way, we’re excited to see our favorite teachers return to our screens! 

All of the main cast is slated for a return and, at the time of this article, there is nothing indicating that cord cutters won’t be able to watch next-day on Hulu as always. 

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Releasing February 22 on Netflix

Netflix’s much-anticipated Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action adaptation is finally right around the corner. Like Mr. and Mrs. Smith, this one had some rocky behind the scenes moments, including when ATLA’s original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko left the project because they didn’t feel like their vision was being supported. 

While DiMartino and Konietzko’s departure from the series is concerning, it’s hard not to root for the success of the series after fans waited for so long to see a live-action adaptation (no, the Shyamalan movie does not count. Sorry, M. Night). 

The series will feature Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko. It seems like, despite the Netflix show departing from the original’s vision, we’ll still have to wait until Season 2 for Toph.  

Shōgun 

Releasing February 27 on Hulu

Hulu’s Shōgun will mark the second adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name. The story follows John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) after he ends up shipwrecked in feudal Japan. He will find himself entangled with Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) — a powerful daimyo, and Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai).

Invincible Season 2 Part 2

Releasing “Early” 2024 on Prime Video

Honestly couldn’t say why a show that took so long to come out with its second season would decide to split said second season into two parts, but that’s exactly what’s happened with Invincible. We don’t know the exact release date yet, but you can expect the rest of the long awaited Season 2 to hit sometime early next year. 

Fallout

Releasing April 12 on Prime Video

The long-awaited adaptation of the beloved video game Fallout is finally making its way to television screens in 2024. Yellowjackets alumn Ella Purnell stars as Lucy in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. Nuclear devastation drives the surviving humans underground, but is it possible there’s more going on above ground than the survivors think? We’ll find out next April! Whatever happens, let’s just hope there’s plenty of Dogmeat in each episode. 

House of the Dragon Season 2

Releasing “Summer” 2024 on Max

The dragons are back, along with their messy human counterparts as the complicated political dance of House of the Dragon returns in Season 2. We always knew it would be a long wait between seasons given the scale of the production, but fans have been itching for the return of the Targaryen-centric drama. Matt Smith, Olivia Cook, Emma D’Arcy, and, well… basically everyone else who survived Season 1 returns in the new year with brand new alliances, betrayals and, yeah, dragon shenanigans. 

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Releasing on Prime Video

The elves, harfoots, and dwarves of Middle-earth return as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continues its story after last year’s Sauron reveal. We don’t know exactly when Galadrien (Morfydd Clark), Arondir (Ismael Cruz Cordova), Queen Regent Miriel (CynthiaAddai-Robinson) and the rest of the large cast of players will be back, but we’re pretty sure it will be sometime in 2024. 

The Spiderwick Chronicles 

Releasing on The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel will step up and release a new adaptation of the beloved Spiderwick Chronicles book series after Disney offloaded the project. For those unfamiliar with the source material, the story follows the Grace Family and the complicated fae adventures that begin to unfold after they move to their ancestral home following a death in the family. We don’t have a premiere date on this one yet, but we know it’s shot and basically finished, so 2024 feels like a safe bet.  

The Acolyte 

Releasing on Disney+

Who wants some evil-tinged High Republic goodness? ‘Cause that’s exactly what we’ll be getting in the upcoming Star Wars series, The Acolyte. Lucasfilm is still keeping a lot of the series details under wraps, but we know it’ll star Dafne Keen, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Carrie-Anne Moss and it will apparently feature more Jedi than any other Star Wars show or movie. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what this one has up its sleeve. 

Skeleton Crew

Releasing on Disney+

That’s right, there are two Star Wars projects that we don’t know a ton about slated to definitely, maybe, probably debut in 2024. Skeleton Crew seems to be the polar opposite of The Acolyte, however. While the former will be filled with Sith-y goodness, Skeleton Crew, as far as we currently know, will have a very limited focus on the Jedi. Currently, all we know is that four kids are going to bite off more than they can chew and get lost in deep space, and that Jude Law and Kerry Condon’s characters are going to find themselves involved somehow. 

Agatha: Coven of Chaos/Darkhold Diaries/Whatever They Change It To Next

This whole name change bit is hilarious until you have to report on the dang show! Anyway, what will undoubtedly end up named Agatha All Along — despite Coven of Chaos being a way better title — is also coming our way in 2024. We don’t even know the actual name of the show, so who knows what we can trust so far as plot details are concerned, but Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness is back, and she’s going to be joined by Aubrey Plaza’s currently unnamed witch and some other spooky friends. 

X-Men ‘97

Releasing on Disney+ 

Honestly, if Disney+ doesn’t release X-Men ‘97 on Saturday mornings, what are we even doing here? The long-awaited continuation of the beloved ‘90s X-Men cartoon will be hitting the streamer sometime in 2024. A whole host of the original cast will be returning, including Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, and Alyson Court. The series will be 10 episodes and, if rumors are to be believed, Season 2 is already in development. 

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Releasing on Disney+

Originally Spider-Man: Freshman Year which, let’s face it, was a better name, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be swinging onto Disney+ sometime in 2024. Timing is unknown, but expect it to be spaced out from X-Men 97. While this will be another origin story, hopefully the plans to pay homage to early Spider-Man comics mean they’ve got some fun, original plans up their sleeves. 

Marvel Zombies

Releasing on Disney+ 

Marvel Zombies is currently slated to be a quickie little mini-series consisting of four episodes. The series spins off from What If…?, giving a deeper look at the popular Marvel Zombies episode and centering on Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan in some way. Like a lot of the other in-development titles, we don’t know a ton just yet. But, Vellani’s a charismatic wonder and fans already dug the premise from the taste of Marvel Zombies that they got back in Season 1 of What If…?, so there’s a lot to be excited for here! 

Creature Commandos 

Releasing on Max

If you don’t know anything about the Creature Commandos don’t worry, you’re not alone! The very basic gist is that Amanda Waller (still Viola Davis, because James Gunn is a smart man) assembles yet another black ops team, but this one’s made up of monsters! The series will feature voice performances from Frank Grillo, Maria Bakalova, Alan Tudyk, David Harbour, Sean Gunn, and Steve Agee. The casting choices were rooted in Gunn’s plan for these characters to bounce back and forth between animation and live-action projects in whatever way the new DC Universe requires. But, we won’t know what that means for some time. 

What we do know is that this series is still slated for 2024 and is meant to be a part of Gunn’s DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters despite the fact that Superman: Legacy is meant to be the start of the story and it won’t release until 2025. He’s throwing us for a loop, but we’re excited to watch it whenever it does ultimately come out! 

Suicide Squad Isekai

Releasing on Max

We already gave Suicide Squad Isekai a shout on our Biggest Anime Coming in 2024 look ahead, but animes are shows too and we’re excited! 

Here’s what our anime expert Rosie Knight had to say about the upcoming project: 

“DC has been making a massive move into anime and manga this year with the release of three new manga series that had fans talking. Joker: One Operation Joker, Superman vs. Meshi, and Batman: Justice Buster threw the DC characters into a whole new light, and in 2024 they'll be jumping onto our screens in a brand new anime. Wit Studio is behind the beautiful looking show that will highlight characters like Harley Quinn, Peacemaker, Deadshot, and King Shark. Jumping into the supernatural world of isekai anime, this will be a DC TV show unlike anything we've ever seen.”

Harley Quinn Season 5

Releasing on Max

HBO’s Harley Quinn series marches on with Season 5! How can we not be amped for more when last season gave us the Gotham City Sirens? Season 4 played with some darker themes alongside the show’s standard black comedy and, given the show’s track record, we only expect things to get better next year. 

My Adventures With Superman Season 2

Releasing on Max

The first season of My Adventures With Superman was an absolute joy, and we can’t wait for the dork from Smallville to return in the upcoming Season 2. There are literally no other details about it at this point beyond the fact that it’s happening and that it’ll probably be in 2024. 

The Penguin

Releasing on Max

This one’s been cooking since The Batman knocked all of our socks off in 2022. As you guessed from the title, the series will follow Colin Farrell’s Penguin as he rises to power in Gotham. Note: this is not the other series spinning off from The Batman — which is also considered an Elseworlds story in James Gunn’s DCU — that will focus on Jeffrey Wright’s James Gordon and Arkham Asylum. 

… We’re going to need to draw up a timeline on this universe before the dang thing even technically launches! 

Either way, The Penguin will be here in 2024, and we’re stoked for both it and the untitled Arkham project.

Alien

Releasing on Hulu

Who do we talk to in congress about passing a law that prevents naming projects in the same universe with the exact same title as something else that has already happened in the said universe? 

Anyway! There’s an Alien show coming out. It’s just called Alien, because someone in some boardroom decided that we all need to be very confused. Frustrating naming conventions aside, there’s a lot to be excited about here! The series will take place three decades before the first film in the franchise, also named Alien (I’m really not trying to beat a dead horse with the name here but come on you guys!). The series is overseen by showrunner Noah Hawley and will star Timothy Olyphant, Sydney Chandler, and more. 

Interview with the Vampire Season 2

Releasing on AMC

Adaptations are, of course, excused from the previous same name rant. AMC’s Interview with the Vampire acts as the second adaption to Anne Rice’s vampire novel of the same name, this time reimagined with the current time period in mind. More people should watch this show and, since we don’t know when Season 2 will be dropping in 2024, you currently have a ton of time to do so! 

The series features impeccable performances from Jacob Anderson as Louis and Sam Reid as Lestat. The two characters are as bitchy and as murderous as ever, resulting in a beautiful, gory, masterful adaptation of Rice’s story. Season 2 promises to turn things up to eleven as their relationship becomes more tumultuous than ever. Plus, more murder! 

Chucky Season 3 Part 2

Releasing on USA Network

Speaking of murder (and short seasons being pointlessly split up into two parts), Chucky Season 3 returns with the second half sometime in 2024. Chucky’s one of the few on the list that belongs to a network television show rather than a streamer, but you can still check it out the next day on Peacock. 

The Boys Season 4

Releasing on Prime Video

Most of the Gen V team are trapped in a doorless room, but that’s ok because The Boys Season 4 is right around the corner. How soon is “right around the corner”? We’re not sure, but it’s definitely in 2024, and there’s definitely going to be a lot of f*&cked up shenanigans that unfold. Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) is dying because he got too hopped up on V24, Homelander (Antony Starr) is very probably dying if the trailer’s hints are to be believed, and America has a new President and First Lady. That last part sounds like the most mundane bit of the list, but that First Lady is Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit), so expect heads to be a’poppin.  

The Umbrella Academy Season 4

Releasing on Netflix 

Ready or not, it’s nearly time to say farewell to the Hargreeves family. Season 4 doesn’t have a release date or details yet, but we know that the fourth and final season will be a truncated one, consisting of only six episodes. The primary cast — which includes Elliott Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampmann, Robert Sheehan, and Aiden Gallagher — will all be returning for the final installment. 

Future Season That Will Maybe/Hopefully Be In 2025

There are quite a few shows that we miss that simply won’t be making their returns in 2024 but are still definitely happening. We’re just giving you a list for these, as most of them are still in flux.
