Overview

"Secrets and Lies" is the third episode of the first season of the MonsterVerse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Synopsis[]

Shaw leads the team on a dangerous mission to Alaska in search of Hiroshi. Keiko, Lee, and Billy present their findings to General Puckett.

Plot[]

Tokyo
2015

Monarch's cameras overhear Lee telling Cate they can leave to find out what happened to her father. He wants to learn the truth by going to where the trail ended - in Alaska. Hiroshi was more of a son to Lee than a nephew. That's why Lee wants to find him. The alarms go off in the facility, and the group escapes to the van. Lee drives the van and crashes through gazebos, bushes, and a front gate.

Two Years After The Philippines

Lee, Keiko, and Billy wait for General Puckett to arrive at a Monarch facility. Lee convinces them they need backup to do real science stuff instead of a secret monster-hunting club. Keiko takes everyone inside to show them a giant impression of a print they took in a muddy field in Indonesia. They can lure the creature out of hiding using 150 pounds of Uranium. The trio explains that the Titans feed on radiation. A creature like this is a threat to global security. Puckett agrees to give them the 150 pounds, leading Billy, Lee, and Keiko to celebrate when Puckett is gone. Lee and Billy disagree with how they should approach the military. After Billy leaves, Keiko reminds Billy that he's important to their mission. She doesn't want to hide who they are or what they're doing.

Lee looks through Billy's recordings and thinks there must be something in them that Monarch wants. May digitized all of them before they left Japan. Monarch was founded in the late '40s, which makes Lee about 90, which he attributes to good genes. He finds the picture of Keiko and reminisces about the hopes he, Billy, and Keiko had for the company. Hiroshi did work for the company - it was his family business. Cate is mad they didn't try to warn people about the monsters. Lee insists they did, but nothing could have stopped Godzilla. Cate doesn't think this is their family business but their family curse. She leaves the car and looks at the ocean.

Keiko, Lee, and Billy exit an Army jeep and arrive at an Army camp. A soldier paints monsters on the side of a Uranium bomb. Lee confronts General Puckett about them going in a direction they didn't discuss. Puckett insisted that if they can lure what they're dealing with into the open, they'll kill it, not put it in a crate. It might not be what the scientists had in mind, but it's bigger than them. Lee asked for the support of the Army and this is what that looks like.

May calls someone and tells them she's on a ship. She might be coming back soon. When her call is over, she tosses the phone into the ocean. Kentaro eavesdrops on the conversation. He wants to know what's happening, but she doesn't want to talk. Kentaro tells her that Lee wants to go over the game plan. May's mad that she is dragged into this mess because it cost her everything. She can't leave until they sort out this mess and he can get back what she lost.

Lee tells the trio they need to get rid of the files. Kentaro doesn't want to throw the files in the ocean. He doesn't understand why they are going to Korea instead of Alaska. There is someone in Korea that Lee needs to find. If Kentaro and Cate want to call the shots, they can, but he needs to know where to go once they arrive. Kentaro takes the files and throws them overboard.

2015

The group arrives at a dock and gets into line number two. When line number one opens, the guard forces the group into that line. Lee ends up being detained because he can't provide a passport. One of the guards overtakes the other and then embraces Shaw. He helps them escape in a truck.

Tim and Michelle Duvall are at an air carrier where Natalia Verdugo lands in Japan. She speaks to Duvall in French to reveal the escapade is a rouge mission of Tim's. Duvall tells them that Shaw and the others are detained in Pohang. Verdugo wants to take Tim back with her, though Duvall asks to bring Tim along. He might know more about the files and Lee's movements.

Du-Ho, the guard, escorts the group to an airstrip where a Bamboo Bomber waits.

Bikini Atoll
1954

The camp is quiet as they wait for signs of the creature. If the monster doesn't appear Keiko, Lee, and Billy will lose the Army's backing. Keiko thinks it's better than watching them obliterate something they don't understand. The sonar short circuits and Billy begins recording. From the depths of the ocean emerges Godzilla. Keiko doesn't want to go through with killing the creature. Lee tries to convince Puckett to stand down, though he refuses. Godzilla arrives with a roar, and Puckett gives the detonation signal. Keiko tries to stop the satellite, but Lee restrains her. Moments later, the bomb detonates with a giant cloud. Keiko sobs in the sand while Lee holds her.

Alaska
2015

Kentaro asks Lee questions about his father, learning that Lee last saw him twenty years ago. Lee doesn't have any insight into their family situation. May picks up on Lee's use of "data-driven" and uses the coordinates of Alaska to find information. The only thing not crossed off Hiroshi's list is Alaska. Hiroshi's destination was Barrow, but Lee didn't think that's where he was going.

Bikini Atoll
1954

Billy finds an upset Keiko alone. She's mad that Lee stopped her earlier. Billy knows the Army would have set off that bomb anyway. Lee walks over to tell them about their funding. Puckett rejected the grand proposal because he didn't think they asked for enough. The government gave them a blank check to find more creatures out there. Billy wants to warn the world. Keiko suggests they keep some of their information a secret - which isn't a lie. Lee can only tell Puckett what they tell him. He trusts they will only tell him all that he needs to know. Billy is fine with that.

Alaska
2015

Cate wakes up and talks to Du-Ho about finding her father. She doesn't appreciate life so much because she's seen so many people die. He had watched lots of people die, too. He rolls the dice each morning. Terrible things might happen, but she shouldn't hide from pain. She can hide under the covers or go on an adventure that might lead her to tell her father to screw himself. The plane hits turbulence, and the meters go off. Lee takes over flying, and Du-Ho assures May that Lee is the best pilot he knows. Everyone buckles in as their nose dives to the ground. They level out just in time for a rough landing near a cliff. Cate and Lee burst out in laughter.

Everyone trudges through the snow, and Kentaro finds a wing of the plane his father was on. They kept going and located the wreckage. There's a body in the pilot seat. Kentaro confirms that it's not Hiroshi. The seat belt is unbuckled so Lee wonders if he was thrown free. Du-Ho makes an exclamation, so they follow him. They find a tent set up several feet away. They walk in where the tents have gear inside. Cate finds a map with handwriting that she and Kentaro recognize as their fathers. They realize that he survived and hug.

Du-Ho pulls the wreckage from the frozen mountain and finds a multicolored rope sticking up from the ground. He yanks on it to find landing gear, meaning the plane landed safely and was destroyed afterward. He investigates the plane and finds a giant slash mark in the side. He shouts to them that they have to leave quickly. The ground rumbles as Du-Ho taxis the plane. Seconds before the group can reach the plane, a monster erupts from the ice and attacks it. It freezes the aircraft with its breath. Everything inside, including Du-Ho, is frozen solid. The creature lets out a ferocious roar.
