New Accountability Note: Collective Protection for Communities and Rights Defenders At Risk In Colombia’s Pacific region, ACADESAN, the Community Council of the San Juan River, defends the rights of its 72 Afro-Colombian communities in areas affected by armed conflict. Like rights defenders around the world, ACADESAN and its communities face violence, forced displacement, and reprisals. Like many governments, the Colombian government has responded by committing to protect at-risk defenders, mainly with measures focused on individuals. But it also has some commitments to broader protection measures. ACADESAN calls for bottom-up approaches to protection of the communities it represents, and has worked to hold the government accountable for delivering on its legal and policy commitments to collective protection. The Accountability Note tells the story of ACADESAN’s breakthrough advocacy campaign for collective protection in English for the first time. 🖐 Playful learning: Meaningful training in one that brings content to life in a practical and fun manner to participants. 🖐 EnCompass’ Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (hashtag #MEL) Activity (https://lnkd.in/eaAmEaiW) team, under the regional MEL platform based in hashtag #ElSalvador and serving eight countries in the hashtag #CentralAmerica region, again brought training to the next level. This time round the team utilized ludic pedagogy (https://lnkd.in/gEUAnbrh) and gamification (https://lnkd.in/egJuwgE) against Alice in Wonderland backdrop to make sense of an otherwise quite arid topic: hashtag #samplingstrategies for hashtag #datacollection. Ludic training methods have long succeeded in translating difficult concepts into long-lasting learning experiences for children, youth and adults alike. Linked to hashtag #ludic methods is hashtag #gamification, which uses games and similar techniques to make learning fun and enjoyable, enriching the learning experience and contributing to achieving the training objectives The result was a loud success! Over 36 participants in the sampling training that took place on May 24 in San Salvador were actively engaged during this dynamic, three-hour, in-person learning experience that required people to physically move across the room to demonstrate different hashtag #sampling strategies. Bingo! 🎯 It all made more sense to them. Proud to lead our dedicated team at IRC Honduras and collaborate with local partners and esteemed colleagues at USAID Honduras to implement the Improved (Re)integration Services Activity. Known locally as ‘ Regreso Seguro’ (Safe Return), the comprehensive program is funded by USAID Honduras and implemented by the International Rescue Committee (IRC). This initiative aims to support the reintegration of Honduran irregular migrants and internally displaced persons into their communities, ensuring their reintegration is effective, safe, and dignified. The program employs a structured approach with several result packages targeting specific reintegration aspects: • Institutional Capacity Building: Enhancing the capabilities of local service providers and governmental bodies to offer effective reintegration services. • Policy and System Development: Advocating for and assisting in implementing policies that support inclusive and sustainable reintegration. • Community Engagement and Support: Fostering positive community attitudes towards returnees and IDPs to support their reintegration and mitigate challenges.

The IPS-partnered R2COM project - Radicalisation and Violent Extremism Prevention in the Community has 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟭𝟬 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 to enhance their role in P/CVE by empowering communities! 👉After identifying continuous training as a critical need to support NGOs and CSOs work in the P/CVE field, the 𝗥𝟮𝗖𝗢𝗠 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 working with vulnerable groups and persons coming out of prison. After the piloting stage here are some insights from practitioners, regarding its main outcomes: ✅Increased knowledge of the need to develop a multi-agency framework, either with other civil society bodies but also with governmental agencies; ✅Deeper understanding of the different vulnerabilities that can contribute to extremist engagement, and how these are dynamic and complex, reflecting individual and environmental dimensions; ✅Enhanced sense of responsibility to prevent extremist engagement when working with vulnerable groups, even if indirectly. The success of the R2COM project underscores the importance of continued collaboration and education in this field, to broaden the use of a compreensive and humane strategy to support those who what to leave radical ideals behind. For the past 4 years, the USAID-funded and Chemonics-implemented Violence Prevention and Reduction (PREVI) activity has been improving citizen security in #Mexico through innovative strategies that center #sustainable collaboration with local actors. Today, we're reflecting on the two-pronged approach successfully used to build trust between citizens and police and address the root causes of crime.
