“Arts and Music is a lovely way to come together and heal,” says Tara Moreno-Wallen, founding Director of Serenity House Communities. “We need to get creative if we are going to solve this growing problem of addiction and overdose. The only way we can really get to the root of the problem is by coming together.

“One of the biggest hurdles to this epidemic is the stigma. We need to learn how to be vulnerable and talk about our issues without judgment or fear. There’s this deep shame connected to addiction. This doesn’t have to be the way.”

In addition to live music, Moreno-Wallen will have a poster photography exhibit on display of women who are in recovery and vocal about their journey.

For the past five years, Moreno-Wallen and her team have provided annual awareness events like the Flint Recovery Arts and Music Show to eradicate the stigma surrounding addiction and to bring together the community, local businesses, treatment providers, and other health services.

The Flint Recovery Arts and Music Show is sponsored by Genesee Health System and Genesee County Health Center.
