Sure...No. Crap, I don't know. I gotta do something. Let people know they can't go walking all over Jack.Jack

Stop officer Jack from blowing up the power plant is a quest in Fallout 2.

Walkthrough[]

NCR's primary power generator is located downtown; however, it is unguarded, as the police assume the citizens won't try to nuke their power supply. This weakness was exploited by Officer Jack, a policeman who suffered a nervous breakdown due to his ex-wife, Mira, then strapped himself with explosives, aiming to blow up the reactor.

The Chosen One can rectify the situation at the behest of Dorothy, the city's engineer. There are several ways to deal with the threat:

  • Talk Jack out of it (Speech 80% or the Speaker perk). The easiest dialogue path is 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 (there is only one node where the dialogue choice does not matter). Successfully talking Jack down earns 6000 XP. Talk to Dorothy for another 3000 XP (this bonus will not show up onscreen), a Big Book of Science, a Scout Handbook, a First Aid Book and a Dean's Electronics.
  • Wait for Jack to begin his routine ("Bite me! This is Jack!") and blast him, then tell Dorothy there was no alternative to killing him, which yields the books and 3000 XP. Telling her that there was a way to avoid bloodshed yields nothing except loot from Jack.
  • Let him blow up, then repair the bank of monitors on the wall with either Science or Repair (which does not require getting the option to tell Dorothy about being good at repairing things, which requires Repair 65%). This yields 3000 XP and the books as a reward, plus anything found in Jack's body parts.
  • Let him blow up, then stand back and watch as Dorothy fails to repair the computer. She may die in the resulting explosion, in which case a Scout Handbook and Dean's Electronics appear on the ground, but there is no other reward for this. The force fields to Westin's and Carlson's estates go down, but trespassing there results in the policemen turning hostile.

Bugs[]

Beware that attempting to repair the computer in her shop before Officer Jack appears, this quest becomes unavailable due to a script bug. (Dorothy might say: "Crap! I got one word of advice-RUN!" prematurely when this bug is triggered.)
