Herbert Clark Hoover was an American engineer, businessman, and politician who served as the 31st president of the United States of America from 1929 to 1933.

Background[]

Born in West Branch, Iowa in 1874, Herbert Hoover moved to Oregon at age 11.[1] He enrolled in Stanford University in 1891, from which he would graduate as a mining engineer. While at Stanford he would begin dating Lou Henry, who he would eventually marry on February 10th, 1899.[2][3]

He eventually got into politics, and gained fame throughout the United States due to his organization of humanitarian aid to nations such as Belgium in the wake of World War I, earning himself the nickname "The Great Humanitarian".[4] He would enter politics in 1917 as the director of the U.S. Food Administration and later as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge.[5][6] Elected president in 1929,[7] President Hoover found himself overwhelmed by the vast effects of the Great Depression and subsequently lost reelection in 1932 to political rival Franklin D. Roosevelt. After the Great War he is best remembered for being the namesake of Hoover Dam located on the Colorado River.

Hoover and his wife Lou built Rapidan Camp in Shenandoah National Park, using it as a presidential retreat. Their cabin became known as the "Brown House," in reference to the White House in Washington, D.C..[8] When his term came to an end, he donated the camp to the executive wing of the government for use by future presidents.[9] Their former cabin had become a tourist attraction before the Great War, attended to by staff including a Mister Handy, Gumley. Gumley is programmed to deliver various facts about President Hoover if asked by visitors.

When his term came to an end, President Hoover donated Rapidan Camp to the executive wing of the government. So future Presidents could continue to use the camp and enjoy the natural beauty of Shenandoah National Park. Sometimes out Presidents still stay here, but one hasn't visited in quite some time. From what I can remember some under secretaries were stationed here on that eventful day, but I haven't... seen them for some time now."
