FO76 Playable Ghoul promo 01

Playable ghouls is an upcoming mechanic in Fallout 76 that will release in early 2025.

After reaching level 50, a quest will unlock that will allow the Vault Dwellers to become a ghoul if they wish. This leads into ghoul-specific perks and abilities, especially those relating to radiation, and NPCs will react to the player differently if they are a ghoul. Becoming a ghoul is not permanent, and players will be able to switch back to being human.[1]

Fallout Tactics and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel both previously featured playable ghouls; however, Fallout 76 is the first game to let a player character become a ghoul, rather than playing as a pre-made ghoul character.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Playable ghouls coming to Fallout 76 was first announced at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2024, alongside the trailer for Skyline Valley. The video gave a release date of "early 2025."
  • The mechanic is presumed to arrive alongside a major update in early 2025, as with previous content releases. The Milepost Zero update will release in September 2024, though it is not yet known if there will be another update in between Milepost Zero and the one that implements playable ghouls in early 2025.
  • According to producer Bill LaCoste, the development team had discussed the possibility of implementing a playable ghoul race for some time. After the release of the Fallout TV series, highly positive fan reception to the character of the Ghoul further solidified the team's plans, with LaCoste saying "we knew we'd made the right decision."[1]
