Basics[]

Legendary crafting, first introduced in the Nuclear Winter update and significantly expanded in the Wastelanders and Steel Reign updates, is a system for crafting or adding Fallout 76 legendary effects to weapons, armor, and power armor.

Nuclear Winter[]

With the release of the Nuclear Winter update, it was possible to craft gear from scratch as legendary for the first time. Solar and Thorn armor were introduced and are only able to be crafted as legendary at an armor workbench. Non-legendary variants are not obtainable nor do these two armor types drop from Purveyor Murmrgh, events or legendary creatures. This armor is also not able to be bought from or sold to other players or vendors. Crafting these two armor types requires legendary modules in addition to normal crafting materials. The crafted armor piece will always be a three-star legendary with randomly generated effects. All effects are possible except a few exceptions like cloaking and harder to detect.[clarification needed]

Wastelanders[]

In the Wastelanders update, a significant number of new legendary craftable weapons and armor were added. These continue the pattern of the armor added in Nuclear Winter of being craftable at the appropriate weapons or armor workbench. However, these new additions can also be obtained from Purveyor Murmrgh and events. These new weapons and armor include the following:

Like the armor in Nuclear Winter, this crafted gear requires legendary modules and is not tradable. A major difference, however, is that the number of star-effects is random and no effects are excluded from the list of possible effects.

Steel Reign[]

The Steel Reign update brings a significant addition to the legendary crafting system. For the first time, legendary effects can be re-rolled and non-legendary equipment can be made legendary. Legendary effects are also now possible to apply to power armor. All legendary effects on the item will be randomly rolled. E.g. re-rolling a legendary weapon with 1 star to 3 stars will result in a weapon with three random legendary effects. The original 1-star legendary effect will not be preserved.

Despite claims to the contrary, legendary crafting is 100% random. It is not affected by the player's Luck stat or any other game mechanics.

Once in a Blue Moon[]

The Once in a Blue Moon update brought another significant change to the legendary crafting system. New unique legendary items such as the Holy Fire can be rerolled to have new legendary effects. This change however did not apply to preexisting unique legendaries, as they still lack the option to be rerolled.

Crafting Costs[]

In addition to legendary modules, the new system also requires Legendary cores. The amounts required depend on the type of gear and the number of legendary stars which should be applied.
