From Middle French happe, from Old French happe, of uncertain origin. Perhaps a derivative of Old French happer (to seize quickly, snap up). Alternatively, perhaps from Frankish *happā (knife, billhook, sickle) a variant of *happjā (axe), related to Old High German happa (modern German Hippe).
