Etymology 4

Probably a byform of (now also obsolete) grinnen. Alternatively it has been explained from etymology 3 through a theoretical intermediate “grind one's teeth”, but these seems far-fetched. The development of the d is easily explained from the inflections grin(d)t, grin(d)de, gegrind.
