The Voice of Reason[3][4] (Greek: Φωνή Λογικής, romanized: Foní Logikís, FL) is a far-right,[5][6][7][8] ultranationalist[9][10][11] political party in Greece. It was established in 2023 by Afroditi Latinopoulou, a lawyer and former tennis athlete.[12][13]

The party was originally founded as "Homeland" (Greek: Πατρίδα, romanized: Patrída), but was excluded from the May 2023 Greek legislative election by the Supreme Court due to a dispute over the name and symbol of the Patriotic Force for Change (PATRIDA) party, to which Latinopoulou had previously belonged.[14][15] The party was subsequently renamed and took part in the snap June 2023 Greek legislative election, receiving 0.43% of the vote. In the 2024 European Parliament election, it received just over the electoral threshold of 3%, electing its leader Afroditi Latinopoulou as an MEP.[16] On July 8, 2024 the party joined the Patriots for Europe, after the latter merged with Identity and Democracy.[17]

Ideology

Although the party's manifesto lacks information on economic policy, Latinopoulou's ideology is often described as nationalist[18] and far-right, a label she rejects.[19] She advocates for anti-abortion rights,[20] opposes LGBTQ rights,[21] and has expressed transphobic[22][23][24][25] and anti-immigration views,[26] repeatedly calling for the borders to be closed.[27] She expressed her desire to work with other European far-right leaders, including Marine Le Pen or Giorgia Meloni,[28] and endorsed a vote for Le Pen's and Jordan Bardella's National Rally in the 2024 French legislative election.[29]

On the 2023 Israel-Hamas War, the party supported Israel and condemned the October 7 attack as an attack on Western civilisation, though Latinopolou later emphasized that both sides should respect the rules of war, particularly considering children.[30][31] The party also condemned the 2024 Iranian strikes on Israel.[32] The party condemned the court ban on the Spartans political party contesting the 2024 European Parliament election in Greece.[33]

The party leader has repeatedly sparked controversy with her views on womanhood, victim-blaming, and human rights, which many Greek media outlets have condemned as hate speech.[6][34] A notable incident occurred in 2022 when she was banned from running with New Democracy after making fatphobic[11] remarks about Greek TV presenter Danai Barka.[35][36] In 2021, in a similar controversial incident she compared homosexuality to pedophilia.[37][38]

In June 2024, Latinopolou was mentioned in the list of the 23 most controversial new MEPs in European Parliament, compiled by Politico.[20]
