The following is a list of unproduced Jonathon Demme projects in roughly chronological order. During his long career, American filmmaker Jonathon Demme has worked on several projects which never progressed beyond the pre-production stage under his direction. Some of these projects fell in development hell, were officially canceled, were in development limbo or would see life under a different production team.

1990s

Harry Potter

On September 22, 1999, Demme was listed as a director of the feature film adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels for Warner Bros., as well as Chris Columbus who ended up directing the first 2 films.[1]

2000s

Bob documentary

On May 21, 2008, Demme was set to direct a Bob Marley documentary for Tuff Gong Pictures and Steve Bing’s Shangri-La Entertainment after Martin Scorsese left the movie.[2]

2010s

Honeymoon with Harry film

On August 2, 2010, Demme was set to direct the feature film adaptation of Bart Baker’s novel Honeymoon with Harry with Paul Haggis writing the screenplay, Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper in talks to star, producing the movie with Dave Bartis, Elloit Abbott, & Avram Ludwig.[3] On March 22, 2011, Demme left the film due to De Niro’s non-committal to starring in the movie,[4] and on January 18, 2017, Nick Cassavetes took over the movie as director.[5]

Old Fires film

On October 24, 2012, Demme was set to direct Heather McGowan’s family dramedy screenplay “Old Fires” with Rosalie Swedlin and Caroline Kaplan producing for Anonymous Content.[6]

Line of Sight series

On June 18, 2013, Liman was set to direct the pilot and produce Blake Master’s sci-fi drama “Line of Sight,” for AMC.[7] In August 2013, Sarah Clarke,[8] LisaGay Hamilton,[9] David Morrissey,[10] Olafur Darri Olafsson, and Omar Metwally were casted.[11] In September 2013, Samantha Mathis, Kai Lennox,[12] and Chinasa Ogbuagu were casted in the series.[13] On March 5, 2014, AMC passed on the series.[14]

Intolerable Cruelty

On October 22, 2000, Demme was in negotiations to direct the Coen Brother’s dark rom-com screenplay “Intolerable Cruelty” with Hugh Grant, Tea Leoni and Geoffrey Wright in talks to star and Universal Pictures & Imagine Entertainment producing the film, before the Coen’s took over the movie.[15]
