Update history

Each update includes the improvements in all previous updates.

  • Ver. 18.0.1 (Released April 22, 2024)
    • Fixed an issue where some wireless access points cannot be found when setting up a new wireless network.
      • If you’re unable to update to Version 18.0.1 because of the issue, temporarily change the security settings for your wireless network to use only “WPA2 (AES)” so you can connect wirelessly to download and install the system update.
      • After updating to Version 18.0.1, restore your network’s security settings to its previous settings.

    "Platinum Point Notification Settings" has been added under Notifications in System Settings.

    • Unclaimed Platinum Points earned from completing Nintendo Switch Online missions on your Nintendo Switch system will generate notifications.
    • Setting these notifications to OFF will hide the notification sent when there are unclaimed Platinum Points.
  • Ver. 14.0.0 (Released March 21, 2022)

    "Groups" feature was added to the All Software menu.

    • You can now create groups of software to help organize your software titles.
    • Making groups for different game genres, developers, or whatever you’d like to organize by may make it easier to find the application you want.
      • Up to 100 groups can be created with a max of 200 titles per group.
    • The button to proceed to the "All Software" screen is displayed only when there are 13 or more software title icons on the system.

    Bluetooth® Audio volume behavior was changed.

    • You can now adjust the volume of Bluetooth audio devices using either the Nintendo Switch™ console or through volume control buttons on the Bluetooth audio device.
      • The Bluetooth audio device must support AVRCP profiles for these changes to work.
    • The volume displayed on the console will reflect the Bluetooth audio volume when using the device’s control buttons.
    • The maximum volume output for some Bluetooth audio devices has been increased.

    Bluetooth® audio support was added.

    • Headphones, earbuds, speakers, and other audio devices that connect with Bluetooth can now be paired with Nintendo Switch family systems for audio output.
      • Bluetooth microphones are not supported.
      • Up to two compatible wireless controllers can be connected to the system while using Bluetooth audio.
      • Bluetooth audio cannot be used while local wireless communication is active.
      • Depending on the Bluetooth audio device, there may be some audio delay.
      • For more information, see How to Pair and Manage Bluetooth Audio Devices.

    “Update Dock” was added under System in System Settings for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model systems, allowing for software updates to Nintendo Switch docks with a LAN port.

    • Dock software updates are not available for Nintendo Switch docks without a LAN port.
    • This feature was not added to Nintendo Switch Lite.
    • For more information, see How to Update the Dock Firmware.

    “Maintain Internet Connection in Sleep Mode” was added under Sleep Mode in System Settings.

    • When this setting is enabled, systems with wired internet connections will maintain internet connection even while in sleep mode. This allows for software and add-on content to download to the system while the system is in sleep mode.
      • The setting is enabled by default.
    • When this setting is disabled, the system will connect to the internet only periodically, which decreases power consumption and delays downloads while in sleep mode.

    Note: Systems that are not updated to version 13.0.0 or later behave as if this setting is enabled.

    The method to initiate “Calibrate Control Sticks” in System Settings was changed.

    • From System Settings, go to Controllers and Sensors, select Calibrate Control Sticks, then fully tilt the control stick in any one direction and keep it tilted for a few seconds to begin calibration.

    Users can now view whether their wireless internet connection is using the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency band under “Connection Status” after selecting Internet in System Settings.

  • Ver. 12.1.0 (Released July 5, 2021)

    Added the following system functionality:

    • If there is not enough space remaining on the system memory (internal storage) or microSD card when downloading game software update data, you can now delete old data for that software, enabling you to download the new data.
      • When deleting the old data, you won't be able to play the game until the new data has finished downloading.

    We fixed the issue with the save data backup feature, where in rare cases, the automatic backup of save data is interrupted if a communication error occurs during completion of the save data backup process.

  • Ver. 11.0.1 (Released December 10, 2020)

    Corrections for the following problems that occurred with system update version 11.0.0:

    • Corrected a problem where some games couldn't be played correctly.
    • Corrected a problem where, in combination with some TVs, the image would not be displayed in TV mode and an error occurred.
    • Corrected a problem which changed how the Control Stick and the C Stick on the Nintendo GameCube controller responded.
  • Ver. 11.0.0 (Released November 30, 2020)

    Nintendo Switch Online was added to the HOME Menu.

    A new feature that automatically downloads backed up save data was added to the Save Data Cloud.

    • When using software with the same Nintendo Account linked to multiple systems, save data backed up from one console will automatically be downloaded to your other system(s).
      *To use this feature, it must be enabled under System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
      *Save data will not be downloaded automatically unless save data for that software exists on the console. The first time only, users must download the save data manually.
      *A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the Save Data Cloud service.

    A new Trending feature was added to the User Page.

    • Users can check what software their friends are playing or have started playing recently.
      Information will not be displayed for friends who have their online status set to display to no one.

    Users can now transfer screenshots and videos from Album to their smart devices.

    • Users can wirelessly connect their smart devices to Nintendo Switch to transfer the screenshots and videos saved within their Album.
    • For screenshots, users can transfer a maximum of 10 screenshots and 1 video capture at once.
      *To connect, users must use their smart device to scan the QR Code displayed on the Nintendo Switch screen.

    A new Copy to a Computer via USB Connection feature was added under System Settings > Data Management > Manage Screenshots and Videos.

    • Users can use a USB cable to connect Nintendo Switch to their computers to copy the screenshots and videos saved under Album.
      * A USB charging cable [model HAC-010] or a USB-IF certified USB cable that supports data transfer is required to connect to a computer.
      For more information, please refer to the Nintendo Support website.
      * Connection via the Nintendo Switch dock is not supported. Please connect the Nintendo Switch system directly to the computer.

    Users can now select what download to prioritize when there are multiple downloads in progress.

    • When there are multiple software, update data, or downloadable content downloads in progress, users can now select which they want to download first.
    • You can set this under Download Options by selecting the icon for the software you want to download first on the HOME Menu.

    User icons were added.

    • 12 user icons that commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. series were added.

    Users can now name preset button mappings with the Change Button Mapping feature.

    Brazilian Portuguese was added as a supported language.

    • When users set their region to the Americas and their language to Português, the language used on the HOME Menu and in certain software will be displayed in Brazilian Portuguese.

    Several issues were fixed, and usability and stability were improved.

    Added a bookmark feature to News.
    This feature allows you to bookmark your favorite news items.

    • A maximum of 300 news items can be bookmarked.
    • An internet connection is required to view bookmarked News items.
    • News items that are no longer available cannot be viewed, even if they were bookmarked.

     

    Added an option to transfer software data between the system memory and an SD card.

    • Users can now transfer downloadable software, update data, and DLC from the system memory to an SD card (and vice versa).
    • Note that save data and some update data cannot be transferred to an SD card.

     

    Added an option to remap the controller buttons.

    • Analog stick and button configurations can now be changed for each paired controller.
    • Custom configurations can be saved as favorites in System Settings > Controllers and Sensors.
      • Custom configurations are stored on the Nintendo Switch system.
      • Configurations can be customized for the following controllers: Joy-Con (L), Joy-Con (R), Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Button configurations can also be customized on the Nintendo Switch Lite system.
      • This feature is not available for other controllers.
      • On each system, up to five favorite custom configurations can be saved for Joy-Con (L), five for Joy-Con (R), five for Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Five configurations can also be saved as favorites for Nintendo Switch Lite.

     

    Added a new section in User Settings for Play Activity Settings.

    • The options for "Display play activity to:" and "Delete Play Activity" have been moved from Friends Settings to the new Play Activity Settings.

     

    Added new selections to the lineup of user profile icons.

    • Select from 6 new icons from the Animal Crossing: New Horizons game for your user.

      • You can check or delete pre-set alarms.
      • Alarms can be set up only within supported software (to be added at a later time).
      • A controller firmware update may be required to use this feature.
    • You can now configure touch screen sensitivity settings.
      • Select between Standard and Stylus sensitivity (optimized for stylus input).
    • Added the option to turn on/off the system button input (Nintendo Switch Lite only).
      • When this setting is turned off the system no longer receives input from the console buttons, with the exception of the Capture and HOME Buttons, and can only be operated from a wirelessly paired controller (sold separately).
      • This setting is on by default and can only be turned off if a compatible controller (sold separately) is wirelessly paired to the console.
      • The setting will automatically turn back on when the console is restarted or after returning from sleep mode.
    • Added “Online Play Invites” section to the User's page.
      • Invites from friends to join online play in supported software will be displayed in this section.

      • Resolved an issue where some users can’t start the Fire Emblem: Three Houses game, and get an error instead.

    • A Sort Software feature is available after selecting to view All Software from the HOME Menu

    • A View All Available News option is available within News, allowing you to view all news items currently being distributed
      • Go to News, Channel List, then View More.
    • Select from 15 new icons from the Splatoon™ 2 and Yoshi’s Crafted World™ games for your user

    • A feature to Transfer Your Save Data is now available, allowing you to transfer your save data for individual games between your Nintendo Switch systems

    • An option is available to prevent the system from waking from Sleep Mode when an AC adapter is disconnected

      • This also applies when undocking your console
    • A VR Mode (3D Visuals) restriction is available within Parental Controls
      • This will also be available in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app through a later update

    • The term active console has been renamed primary console in Nintendo eShop
      • You can play your digital software and content on non-primary consoles by linking your Nintendo Account

    • Display of Nintendo Switch News articles will be limited to match the restricted software parental controls setting selections
      • Please note that the restriction will only apply to News articles distributed after the release of version 6.0.0
    • Change the layout of the USB keyboard to the desired language

    Removed the following system functionality:

    • After installing the system update, it will no longer be possible to unlink your Nintendo Account from your Nintendo Switch user

      • To view your friend suggestions, from the top-left of the HOME Menu head to your User Page, then Friend Suggestions
      • You must be 13 or older to use this feature
    • Select from 24 new ARMS and the Kirby series icons for your user
      • To edit your user icon, head to your My Page on the top-left of the Home Menu and select Profile
    • Digital software purchases made from a PC or smart device will start downloading sooner than previously, even if the Nintendo Switch console is in Sleep Mode
    • Filter News to view only unread news or news from specific channels
    • To keep the Parental Controls PIN private, the default method for PIN entry has been changed to entering using the Control Stick and buttons instead of the on-screen number pad
      • When prompted to enter you Parental Controls PIN, press and hold the + Button to change between input methods
    • Captured videos in the Album will be restricted by Parental Controls depending on the Restricted Software setting and Software Rating Organization
    • Using the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, add specific software titles to your whitelist to exclude them from the console’s Parental Controls Restricted Software setting
      • Play-Time Limit restrictions will still apply even when the software title has been whitelisted.
    • Receive notification when pre-purchased software is ready to play
    • Nintendo Switch Pro Controller grip colors will now display in the Controllers menu

    Added the following system functionality:

    • Capture video on select games
      • To capture video, hold down the Capture Button during gameplay
      • Up to a maximum of the previous 30 seconds will be saved in the Album. You can trim the beginning and end of each clip, and post to Facebook and Twitter.
      • As of October 18, 2017, this feature is compatible with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, and Splatoon 2
    • Select from 12 new Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild icons for your user
      • To edit your user icon, head to your My Page on the top-left of the Home Menu and select Profile
    • Transfer user and save data to another system
    • Pre-purchase option on Nintendo eShop
      • A pre-purchase option will be available for certain games. This option allows pre-load of the game to your system for quicker play when the game is released.
      • This feature will be supported by future game releases
    • News channel updates
      • The news feed has been updated with a new look.
      • Unfollowing a channel will remove that channel's content from the news feed and following the channel again will make it reappear.
    • Match software version with a group of local users
      • To create a group, head to the software's Options, Software Update, then Match Version with Local Users
      • Everyone's software will be updated to match the most recent version in the group
      • All users must be on system menu version 4.0.0 or later to view and join a group

    General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience, including:

    • Changed the specification which hid wireless networks using TKIP security from the network search results. Wireless networks using TKIP security will now display in search results as a grayed-out selection instead of not being displayed
      • The Nintendo Switch console supports WEP, WPA-PSK(AES), and WPA2-PSK(AES). If your router is using a different security type (e.g. WPA-PSK(TKIP)), you will need to change this security type within your router's settings.

    • Nintendo Switch Online
      • Added online play in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Peru. This is currently available for free until the paid online service launches in 2018.

    • Addressed an issue in which the remaining battery charge can't be displayed accurately

      • To turn this ON/OFF, head to System Settings, Notifications, then Friend Notifications
    • Find paired controllers within communication range by activating the vibration feature
    • Change the user icon order on the Home Menu
      • To change order, head to System Settings, Users, then Change Order
    • Select from 6 new Splatoon 2 characters for user icon
      • To edit your user icon, head to your My Page on the top-left of the Home Menu and select Profile
    • Change the system volume from the Quick Settings
    • The maximum volume when using headphones or speakers connected to the audio jack has been raised and can be lowered if desired.
