The standard Playstation 3 controller has a very good d-pad and good build quality which is something that's hard to find nowadays. Very useful for emulating older consoles.

Using on a PC[]
Previous Dualshock controllers required a special adapter to work. However, the Dual Shock 3 can connect via usb to a pc without an adaptor and only requires special software to work on a pc. In Windows, an external program needs to be installed to use DS3 controllers.
