Cobra Command (コブラコマンド) is a shoot 'em up video game developed by Data East and released in 1988 for arcades and ported the same year to the NES.

Story[]

The Eight-Year War... For eight years from the end of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century, fierce battles were waged between guerilla forces in various places on both the eastern and western camps over the interests in Southeast Asia.

Against the protracted fighting, the voices of opposition to the war grew louder day by day from all over the world, and the Western countries, unable to resist public opinion, suddenly requested a ceasefire and declared the withdrawal of all troops. However, due to the sudden withdrawal, many soldiers of the Western Allied Forces were left behind on the battlefield and became prisoners of war. In order to rescue them, a secret operation was carried out, and a man was about to return to the battlefield. The man's name is Moses. The weapon given to him is the latest combat helicopter Bell 84 Charlie Killer, commonly known as Stiffen Wolf.

However, his duties were not limited to rescuing prisoners of war... There was a betrayal by another man, Colonel Roberts, that forced the Western Allies to withdraw. Moreover, Roberts not only betrayed and defeated his homeland, but also took advantage of the chaos of the war to build a huge wealth and his own kingdom in the hinterland. The other mission given to Moses is to bring the traitor Roberts to justice and destroy his kingdom.

Codename: Cobra Command. Moses, I wish you success and good luck on your mission.

Gameplay[]

Cobra Command is a horizontally-scrolling shoot 'em up. The player controls a helicopter which can shoot bullets forward and missiles diagonally downwards, with each of those mapped to a separate button. Enemy formations drop power ups to improve the main gun and missiles, as well as raising the helicopter's speed.

The NES version of the game plays differently, being more similar to Choplifter as the helicopter can move forward and turn back and must rescue hostages during the levels.
