The pawn system and the nonconformity of its structure help it stand out.
Here is the mini-review I posted to certain social media sites, in its entirety:I played DD1 on Switch (a great port, IMO) just 5 years ago, and loved it. DD2 builds on that foundation. It's a foundation where the makers at Capcom have decided to buck the norm, do their own thing, and craft a game world that is at times unforgiving, both in its restrictions on fast travel and game saves, and in its world filled with deadly enemies. It's also a game of surprises and emergent gameplay. I found it even more immersive and entertaining than the first game. The highlight is the returning system of pawns, where you create an NPC companion that can be hired by other players too. There's variety in the weapons, armor, and vocations (classes) for you and your pawn. Picking others from a rift (the "pawn market" basically) and traveling for a while is great.I loved this game.
Thank you for your feedback

This game so far is great. I haven’t beaten it yet but it’s entertaining to say the least. There are times you will feel amazing as you get the enemies out of your way and then there are other times when you will be overpowered and dispatched of rather quickly. DD2 is a slow burn. Fast travel works not like a traditional open world game but with Oxcarts. This Oxes are slow so the ride to the town will be a slow one but you can press Triangle on PS5 to doze off in the cart to speed up the process of whatever town you’re going to. You may be interrupted by monsters trying to destroy your cart but they can be gotten rid of with pretty good ease. Take it slow and don’t rush it. That’s the best thing you can do if you do. Anyway I recommend it to anyone especially those who love action RPG’s.

*First off: yes microtransactions exist but they are way overblown. You would not even know they existed if you didnt check the psn store for addons or listein to the discourse.

Dragons Dogma 2 is the latest interation of the cult series that stays memorable yet adds enough to spice up the experience. Dd2 has 10 playable vocations (classes) which focus on 1 weapon with 10 levels each that all play unique. Adding onto that you have 4 skill slots to customize your vocation to your playstyle or task at hand. The most unique aspect of Dragons Dogma, the pawn system, a customizable AI party member that follows you on your journey as well as 2 other recruitable AI you rent from other players to assist your adventure, has gotten better with my pawns feeling more like party members I am adventuring with rather then moving storage boxes that sometimes heal me. The world is a vast playground to explore in which will probably be your make or break decision on this game. Dd2 is very old school in its open world mechanics- one save that must be deleted if you wish to start a new game, teleporting is done through rare expendable items, fast travel is done by paying for a real time cart ride (though it can be skipped during the trip) , item weight can quickly stack up while gatheting mats leading to stamina issues while running through the world, damage is cumulative meaning you lose permanent max HP until you rest at a campsite or inn, etc. All in all Dragons Dogma 2 is an old school action rpg that improves upon the last game without losing any of the uniqueness (and jankiness) that made the original Dragons Dogma stand out and become a cult classic.

I never played the first Dragons dogma but I absolutely love Dragons dogma 2 Huge open world Amazing graphics and Definitely the best character Creation system I’ve ever seen in a game also the pawn system is fantastic I love how you can create your own pawn just like you create your main character and it’s awesome how you can recruit pawns from other players as for the micro-transactions I despise them and when I heard dragons dogma 2 has them I was worried but thankfully the micro transactions are completely optional everything can be unlocked through gameplay So in this rare instance the micro transactions are not an issue

Overall Dragons dogma 2 is the best RPG Released this year so far it has great graphics gameplay and an amazing character creation system

Highly recommended

I will jump out in front of some of the issues that people have recently been complaining about. I do not condone nor endorse microtransactions for a full priced game so I do not much care for Capcom adding these weird superfluous ones. having played into the game for a number of hours now I can say its even weirder that they exist at all as none of them give any real advantage nor really serve a purpose. What I mean by this is anything they can do/are already exist in the game and can be found, even the character editor items and fast travel. If there has been any word of buying being the only way it is plainly false. It is part of a strange trend in Capcom games I have noticed since Monster hunter world and Resident Evil 2 Remake, they add in weird microtransactions for things you unlock in game anyway...and not even in the weird grindy way some games do, just in the play the game and get some achievements way (like the good old days lol). It genuinely to me feel like they are added on last minute to please someone higher up in Capcom or investors to give the illusion of monetizing, but that is purely speculation so take that thought with a grain of salt.

Onto the game itself:

Graphically: like many games Capcom makes it looks excellent, the environments character models, monsters, animations all of immensely high quality. The performance on the other hand is much less so. Out in the world it is less noticeable but can chug a bit here and there. In cities and towns for some reason I have noted the most significant performance drops, character pop in low poly models. Its odd but not gameplay/immersion breaking in my 20+ hours. I just genuinely hope they can address it in future patches and wish it had more time in the optimization oven.

Gameplay: If you like Elden Ring getting blended with Monster Hunter and with a touch of Devil May Cry then this game will feel excellent for you. It is challenging initially as the gameplay is unique and requires you to learn its rhythms, like prepping for your trips, finding the right loadout of pawns for what your doing, weight management and what combat style feels good for you. The AI for the pawns is pretty great which surprised me, most Ai allies are ho-hum at best, and they have way to assist with traversal that surprised me. In general the show stoppers are when you find a big beastie in the world and throw down, they are very satisfying and challenging fights. beyond that the exploration is immensely satisfying, I hold it comparable to Elden ring and Botw/totk in quality.

Story: So far the story is fine I can't say it is game changing or the deepest, but spoiler free here. Its pretty alright, it feel more like a vehicle for getting the fun gameplay loop going.

Overall it is a fun game with challenge to overcome, exploration to do and your own stories to craft in your expeditions/conquests. But honestly I'd say give it a month or two for Capcom to iron out some of the technical issues before buying. After they fix the technical stuff more I'd say its a must buy.
