The domain name gives you instant credibility and works as a pathway to pull people to visit your virtual business store.

  • The Domain Name Can Help SEO: Adding your business keywords to your domain name can naturally boost your SEO and help rank your website.

The right name will build your brand and engage customers by creating a strong image for your business.

10 Things to Consider in Choosing a Right Domain Name?

There are over 315 million registered domain names where your domain name wants to stand out.

You can easily register a domain name but selecting the right name for your domain is therefore essential.

People have to easily remember your business name and it should help in Google ranking.

Here, in the further part of this article, let me explain to you the important things to consider when choosing a right domain name for your business.

Advice For Choosing a Right Domain Name in 2024 [10+ Essential Factors]Pin

1. Go with .com extension

The ‘commercial’ short form is ‘.com’ and it is one of the most commonly used domain extensions (TLDs). Some of the other popular TLDs are .net, .org, .biz, .edu, .co etc.

But, still, people have familiarized themselves with type ‘.com’ domains more than anything else. Whenever someone types a website name in the address bar, they end up typing ‘.com’ to open a website.

If the chosen name is not available with the ‘.com’ extension, find an alternate name that is close to your business.

2. Keep it Short, Simple

When we are talking about ‘branding’, people can usually remember short names. Say, for example, the top brands that come into your mind are, ‘Google’, ‘Yahoo’, ‘Pepsi’, ‘And coca-cola’.

So, your business digital name aka domain name should be short and simple. Make sure that the maximum number of characters should not exceed 15 characters.

Choose predictable names and avoid using weird spellings. For example, if you wish to register “marketexpertz.com”, but what every people think and mistype it as “marketexperts.com”.

3. Avoid Numbers, Special Characters, and Hyphens

The domain name should be simple and predictable. Another example, a common confusion on the name is “wellone.com” and “well1.com”.

There is a typo contradiction between the two names but both pronunciations are the same. When you tell your domain name to someone, they don’t know if the number is numerical/character.

Another important point is that you do not use hyphens, underscores, complicated words, jargon words, punctuation, etc.

Imagine if ‘facebook.com’ had a hyphen between ‘face’ and the ‘book’ (like face-book.com). Ultimately you will feel a bit annoyed spreading the word to your friends and others.

4. Choose a Unique and Brandable Name

Your domain name must be unique so that it will stand out from the rest of your competitors. People also can easily remember the name which is unique, short, and simple.

Today many IT companies are offering Digital Marketing Services, but only a few companies will come to our mind whenever we think of SEO.

For example, Neil Patel, Brian Dean, etc. is the leading brand that helps with On-Page SEO, Off-page SEO, and Digital Marketing?

Your domain name is not just a name and it is a foundation for your brand. A creative name can make people easily remember any time.

By doing some more research, you can easily pick a name that is unique and brandable. Some examples I have already mentioned here are, ‘Google’, ‘yahoo’, ‘Pepsi’, etc.

5. Avoid Double Letters

‘tradeexperts.com’ is an example that is prone to typo mistakes and therefore results in loss of traffic.

Therefore, be clear that you should not be using double-letter words in your domain name.

That is, the last letter of the first word should be the beginning letter of the next word.

It will sometimes lead to typo mistakes as people will easily mistype your domain name in the address bar.

6. Use Synonymic Words

If your business domain name is already taken or registered, you can try alternatives such as finding synonymical words.

It is frustrating to start all over again from the beginning. That’s why I am suggesting you find synonymical words for your domain name.

You can use the online thesaurus to find a list of synonyms that you think can be more suitable for the domain names that you wish to register.

Synonymic words can act as a suitable replacement for the domains that are not available for registration.

Sometimes, it may give you a unique idea for your domain names that you could even come up with a better name.

7. Make it Easy to Pronounce

Your domain name should be short, simple, and at the same time, it should be easy to pronounce.

A long domain name can mess things up when someone wants to share your domain name by word of mouth. Though it might be easier to type, make sure it’s easier to spell.

Write your domain name on a piece of paper and ask a few of your friends to pronounce it. If more people are struggling to spell the name, you should find a simple alternative name.

Make sure it’s easy to spell and pronounce.

8. Use Niche Keywords

Everyone is starting a website for a reason. It may be anything like for a business (or) a service. So, think of your business and make sure to include the ‘business keywords’ in the domain name.

Of course, keywords can help your SEO and improve your ranking for relevancy. On the other hand, do not try to stuff keywords into your domain.

The keywords play an important role in choosing a name for a domain. The keywords in the domain name tell the search engines what your website is about?

Along with it, create quality content and improve user experience, to improve your ranking.

If you have your ‘Business Keywords’, place it either at the beginning or at the end of your domain. Because these are the most powerful places for your ranking.

PS: I am not claiming that just using keywords in the domain name guarantees your search engine ranking.

You can use any keyword planner tools like Google Keyword Planner, Keyword Tools, Uber, etc.

9. Think Long-Term

When choosing the right domain name, provides some space for expansion in the future. Because a domain name is like naming your child and you cannot change it later in the future.

Even if the situation comes, it will cost you money, re-branding, and SEO rankings. So far earned credits and rankings will be zero and you have to start from the beginning.

Let’s say, for example, your company is involved in selling kids’ wear and you choose a name like ‘kidsclothings.com’.

After a few years, if you decide to sell clothing for men and women, you have no options unless to choose a new name.

Do not pin yourself and narrow down the niche. So only I am saying always think of a long-term vision when picking up the right domain name.

10. Check for any Trademarks

Moving forward in choosing a right domain name, make sure that the names are not already trademarked.

Avoid such legal consequences so that we can run our business smoothly. After registering the name, we are going to build a brand and therefore it is necessary to have the same name across all digital platforms.

I mean to say, social media profiles like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.

If your domain name is, ‘myownbrand.com’, then your Facebook profile name should be ‘facebook.com/myownbrand’.

And for Twitter is ‘twitter.com/myownbrand’. This will help your audience to easily reach you around the web.

So do a trademark search to confirm the name is not already trademarked to avoid unnecessary legal issues.

11. Use Domain Name Generators

It’s not always recommended to follow your intuition when it comes to choosing a right domain name.

There are many online domain name generator tools available. You just input your niche keywords or phrases related to your online business.

Then, in a few moments, the tool will generate a long list of available names. Some of the recommended tools are NameMesh, Name Station, etc.

How to Register a Domain Name?

So far, I have explained the important factors to consider when choosing a right domain name for your business.

In this part, let me explain to you how to register the name. All the available names on the internet are managed by ICANN (International Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers) a non-profit organization that has its headquarters in the USA.

From this organization, many registrars are licensed to resell domain names in various parts of the world.

Hundreds of domain registrars are on the web. It’s important to choose the right ones carefully so that you can get the best out of them.

A ‘.com’ domain name will cost you around $9 to $15 for one year. You can register in terms of 1yr, 2yr, and more as you wish.

At Raj Softech Solutions, you can register a ‘.com’ domain name at Rs.769 per year. Our renewal prices and transfer charges are also the same.

No hidden charges and along with you will get Free DNS Management, Free Email Forwarding Facility, Domain Theft Protection, Domain Forwarding Facility, etc.

Some of the other popular registrars are:

If you are looking for affordable hosting services, Rajsoftech Hosting is your ultimate choice. The basic plan starts at Rs.89 per month with all premium features.

Personal Advice:

Once you decide on a domain name, buy it along with all its variations (including different TLD) right away. Having your main domain name in ‘.com’ is ok, but make sure to purchase other TLDs.

For example, if you buy ‘myownbrand.com’, also consider registering

  • myownbrand.net
  • myownbrand.org
  • myownbrand.biz, etc.

Why I am saying this to you is, if your brand starts growing, some people may impersonate your brand by registering a domain name that looks similar to your brand under different TLDs.

This will dilute your brand and often disturb your business growth. Genuine visitors may sometimes land on those fake websites and you will lose your business.

Conclusion:

A domain name is your identity on this World Wide Web. People from different parts of the world can easily get your services only through your website.

If you are planning to take your business to the next level, a domain name is therefore essential. It may either grow or break your business.

Buying a domain name is easy but choosing a right domain name for your business requires some research, patience, and expertise.

Follow the advice described in this article and choose a perfect name.

  2. Great comprehensive list. I recommend to anyone stick with the .com as much as possible and try to keep it short and snappy so it’s unique and people remember it.

Another bit of advice I’ve learnt over the years to get a great domain name is consider looking at domain expiring websites that you can search and from there you can find the domain you want and then you can use a drop catching service to grab that domain. This would A. give you the domain you want and B. there is a good chance that domain is aged and Google is happy with it and C. a much higher chance of it being a premium domain without the additional cost.
