Luka Dončić, Slovenia Eliminated by Giannis, Greece in 2024 Olympic Qualifying Semis

The much-hyped showdown between Luka Dončić and Giannis Antetokounmpo in the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament on Saturday turned into a one-sided affair with Greece cruising to a 96-68 win over Slovenia.

Thanks to their victory, Antetokounmpo and the Greece team will play in the final with a spot in the Paris Olympics on the line. Slovenia will miss the Olympics after reaching the semifinals and finishing fourth at the Tokyo Olympics.

Greece controlled this game from the start, taking a 32-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and eventually going up by 31 midway through the fourth quarter. Antetokounmpo scored 13 points, grabbed four rebounds and was a game-high plus-31 in 21 minutes.

Thomas Walkup led the Greek team with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting in 30 minutes. Georgios Papagiannis led all players with 10 rebounds. Nick Calathes finished one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 assists.

The size advantage for Greece was a huge difference in the game with a 38-25 rebounding advantage, including an 11-3 edge on the offensive glass.

Dončić did post a double-double, but not one he will want to remember. The Dallas Mavericks superstar had a game-high 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, but committed 10 turnovers in 34 minutes. He also had seven rebounds and five assists.

Even though the game was largely in hand for most of the fourth quarter, Slovenia head coach Aleksander Sekulić may not have made a lot of fans in the Dallas Mavericks organization.

Dončić, who dealt with knee soreness throughout the Mavs' postseason run, was on the floor until being subbed out with 4:19 left to play. One upside for him in the wake of this defeat is he can rest for a few months after playing 106 games in the past 12 months.

The 2020 Olympics remain the only time Slovenia's men's basketball team has appeared in the Summer Games. The team finished seventh in the FIBA World Cup last year and sixth in EuroBasket two years ago.

Greece is looking to make the Olympic field for the first time since 2008. The country's best finish at the Summer Olympics was fifth, done three times (1996, 2004, 2008).

This is a huge improvement for Greece after a 15th-place showing at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Antetokounmpo didn't play in that tournament because he was recovering from knee surgery.

Greece will play the winner of the Dominican Republic-Croatia matchup in the final on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
