Andy Murray's Wimbledon career came to an unceremonious end Saturday, as mixed doubles partner Emma Raducanu pulled out of their scheduled match due to injury.

According to ESPN, Raducanu released a statement on her decision to remove herself from mixed doubles, citing a sore wrist:

"Unfortunately I woke up with some stiffness in my right wrist this morning, so therefore I have decided to make the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles tonight. I'm disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy but I've got to take care."

The 37-year-old Murray, who was born in Scotland and is a two-time Wimbledon champion, has already announced that he will retire after the Paris Olympics, which begin on July 27.

Murray withdrew from the Wimbledon singles competition prior to his first-round match due to an ailing back, but he committed to playing doubles and mixed doubles.

On Thursday, Murray and his brother, Jamie Murray, were eliminated in the first round of men's doubles by John Peers and Rinky Hijikata, and that proved to be his final match on the Wimbledon grass.

Raducanu, 21, is still alive in women's singles, which was likely a significant consideration when deciding whether she should try to play mixed doubles.

The 2021 U.S. Open champion hasn't enjoyed much success in Grand Slam tournaments since winning her first and only major, but reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon this year marks her best Grand Slam performance of the past three years.

On Sunday, she will face New Zealand's Lulu Sun with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.

As for Murray, Raducanu's withdrawal closes the book on one of the most historic careers ever for a British tennis player at Wimbledon.

In addition to winning the 2013 and 2016 Wimbledon men's singles champion, he reached the semifinals on five other occasions, including one additional finals appearance.

Murray also won Olympic gold in men's singles at the 2012 Summer Games in London, beating the legendary Roger Federer in the final at Wimbledon's All England Club.

For much of his career, Murray was considered part of the "Big Four" of men's tennis along with Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Although he didn't enjoy quite as much success as his counterparts, he still established himself as an all-time great, winning three Grand Slam singles titles, two Olympic gold medals in men's singles and an Olympic silver medal in mixed doubles.

Murray also won 46 career singles titles overall, and he spent time as the No. 1 men's player in the world from 2016 to 2017.

The British fans at Wimbledon are always hugely supportive of their countrymen and countrywomen, and no tennis player gave them greater thrills over the past 20 years than Murray.
