Southern Mississippi CFB Player M.J. Daniels Killed at Age 21 in Shooting

Southern Mississippi defensive back M.J. Daniels, 21, was killed in a shooting on Tuesday night.

Per WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the shooting occurred at the Ivy Row complex that serves as the Southern Miss housing center.

Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem identified the shooting victim as Daniels, and his body was being sent to a medical examiner for an autopsy.

Per TMZ Sports, the Hattiesburg Police Department confirmed that Daniels was shot and killed in his car.

Southern Mississippi issued a statement about Daniels after his death was confirmed:

"The University of Southern Mississippi and the Department of Athletics mourn the loss of M.J. Daniels whose life was lost Tuesday evening during an incident that occurred off campus. We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.

"Daniels, from Lucedale, Mississippi, was a member of the Golden Eagle football team. He played his first season with the Golden Eagles last fall, after transferring from The University of Mississippi. In his lone season with the Golden Eagles, he registered 29 tackles in 12 games played and tied for the team lead in interceptions with three."

Daniels began his college career at the University of Mississippi as a member of the 2021 recruiting class. He appeared in 16 games over two seasons with the Rebels, primarily playing on special teams.

Following the 2022 season, Daniels transferred to Southern Mississippi. He appeared in all 12 games for the Golden Eagles, recording 28 total tackles and three interceptions.
