Is Barstool Sports opening up to online players in New York?

It’s been a long time coming, but finally we have a positive answer to the question, “Is sports betting legal in NY?“  sports betting has only recently gone live across the state, and to kick things off the regulators have licensed a handful of operators to operate legally within state lines.

Unfortunately, Barstool Sports isn’t one of them, much to the surprise of many sports betting fans. After all, the headquarters of Barstool are located in New York, but it seems that hasn’t been enough to persuade regulators to issue the operator with one of their coveted licenses.

Why did Barstool Sports miss out on a mobile sports betting license?

It’s come as a shock to many sports bettors to discover that Barstool Sports hasn’t yet been granted a license to run an online sportsbook in the Empire State. The founder of the operation, Dave Portnoy – often referred to as ‘El Pres’, is a well-known figure in sporting circles, albeit a divisive one. And that may have cost his company one of the initial raft of licenses that were issued to sportsbooks wanting to open up to bettors in the state of New York.

We don’t need to shed any tears for Dave Portnoy just yet, as he remains confident that Barstool Sports will eventually receive a license, once the regulators decide to permit even more operators to open up in the state. But until that day comes, what other sportsbooks are likely going to launch in NY?

The first sportsbooks to officially go live in New York were Caesars, Rush Street Interactive, FanDuel and DraftKings. Five more operators are already queued up to open up their virtual doors to sports betting enthusiasts, including BetMGM, Bally Bet, PointsBet and WynnBet.

Once these brands have settled in, there’s a strong likelihood that the state will then consider issuing further licenses, at which point Barstool is almost certain to try again. And rest assured that if, and when, it goes live, we’ll be on hand to bring you all the most up-to-date information!

Conclusion: the story isn’t over for Barstool Sports in New York

Not surprisingly, we’ll be keeping an eye on Barstool Sports, along with all the other sportsbook operators interested in acquiring a New York license. And as soon as Barstool goes live, we’ll be creating an in-depth review, to tell you all about what to expect.

Until then, our current reviews will help you decide which operator to sign up to. Will this turn into a battle of DraftKings vs FanDuel NY sports betting fans? Watch this space to find out how things pan out!
