Very novel game, overall very fun.
4 Stars
Very novel game, overall very fun.
For those of us that grew up with air hockey tables, this game will give you a feeling of nostalgia. It's got the same feeling, albeit with much different rules and a much smaller playing field. But something about sliding the puck into the rubber band and slinging it back just feels very similar. There are 4 2 player modes and a single player mode, all of which have different rules. They're each fun in their own way, and so quick that you can play them in rapid succession. The puck is nice and heavy and durable enough to withstand abuse from little kids. What caused me to dock a star is two things. First, the pucks are inserted into the sides when storing the game. But, they're very difficult to remove, even as an adult. My 6 year old was completely unable to remove them. Definitely not ideal. Second, the sound quality is just awful. In an age where speakersb in a phone can simulate full surround, I'd expect a device of this size to have crisp and clear sound. Instead, it has a rather muted effect and sounds cheap. Speakers aren't pricey anymore, and if my phone's speakers at a fraction of the size are better, that's not good. Given this is an arcade like throwback, sound is actually an important part, so I wanted to emphasize it in my review.

First off, this game requires a small Phillips head screwdriver to open the battery door and 3 AA batteries - batteries are not included. Once you install the batteries and set up the game (all very simple stuff), you're off and running. There's one button that powers up the device and also acts as the select button for the different game options. Again, super simple and intuitive.

We played it on our pool table on top of a heavy-duty pool table cover. We tried it both ways, short and long, to see how each orientation would work, and both were great. I want to stress that I don't let anyone put ANYTHING on my pool table, but I felt this game was light enough, and I trust my spouse enough to occasionally play on top of it like we did... but I would not recommend it for the sake of the table. Actually, the pool table size is almost perfect, whether longways or short. In fact, we're going to look into making a tabletop that can safely sit on top of the pool table just to play this... and maybe a few other games while we're at it.

Anyway, this game is SUPER fun. I think it helps that my spouse loves all sorts of games, especially ones with action, and we both grew up loving air hockey. This is a really cool take on air hockey without feeling like you're compromising the gameplay or the dynamics that make air hockey so fun. I definitely recommend this game. It's super fun and can be made even more fun with your own rules, too :)

Oh, I do want to say getting the pucks out of their storage spot is a pain! I hope they eventually improve this with future iterations, but I don't think it's egregious enough to deduct a star.

The Hypershot tabletop hockey game from Hasbro is rather simple in it's design, but provides some fast paced fun when you are looking for something a little more interactive than a slow board game.

The Hypershot comes in a box with minimal assembly required. First, you need to open the cover and insert 3 AA batteries (not included). You'll also need to slide the two black feet to their outermost position and then attach the thick blue rubber band to the underside of the feet. Last, you can attach the two blue barrier rails to each side.

The game comes with two slider pucks. The pucks are all plastic and have tiny plastic ball bearings on the underside. You need to position the Hypershot in the middle of a table, turn it on with the one button, and then hit the button to select the game you want. There are 4 games that are all a subtle variation of the same theme - basically, there are blue circle LED lights on the top of the Hypershot. You need to slide the puck to hit the area right underneath the blue light. Usually that means you light up a red "point" LED light on your side of the Hypershot. Most games require you to get 4 red points, or to hit sections to remove all the red lights. When you slide the puck under the Hypershot, the thick rubber band bounces it back to you. I think there are infrared sensors underneath that pick up if your puck hit the correct area. You need to slide the pucks with a medium level of force so they hit the rubber band and bounce all the way back to you.

Ideally, I think you should play on a 4-5 table. Play on a table any longer than that and it becomes a real challenge to accurately hit the right spots on the Hypershot. It can be fun to play on an 8 foot long table, but only for serious players. If you play on a short 3 foot table it might be too short to have fun.

For the price, the game is pretty fun in short bursts. It's not anything that you are going to want to play for 30 minutes straight, but for 8-10 minutes to get a couple rounds in, not bad. I only have two small issues with it. First, I love that they thought about storage for the device. The black feet slide inward for storage, and the two pucks can slide into slots on the feet. That's great. What isn't great is that it is really difficult to get the black feet to slide all the way out. Even more difficult is getting the red pucks out of storage. If you have 7 or 8 year olds playing, they will struggle to get those pucks out because they are held tightly and at an awkward angle. So great storage ideas, just not quite executed well. And finally, I worry about the durability of the thick blue rubber band underneath. If that breaks, the device is a paperweight. I'm not sure if Hasbro will sell replacement rubber bands, but rubber bands can become dry and frail over time. We'll see how long the Hypershot lasts in that regard. I think you can get a couple years out of it with normal use, but not sure how it will hold up longer than that.

So overall, I think the game is unique and fun. The shortcomings aren't too bad, so I'm giving it a solid 4-stars.

My kids love playing different games and my son always likes playing air hockey when we go to an arcade, so I was hoping this might be a somewhat potable version that we could play at home. While it definitely isn't air hockey, this tabletop hockey game is really fun and includes five different games you can play. It was easy to set up and simple to figure out the different rules for the games. I like that it folds up a bit and that the pucks can be stored within the game so they don't get lost. It doesn't take up a lot of room so it's easy to store or to take on the go.

This game was a great thing to have on a rainy day. Both of my boys are staying home with me this summer. I work from home so a lot of what they do during the day is independent. They like to be outside when it’s not super hot but when it rains, they often get bored inside quickly. This was a fun game that I was able to give to them and easy for them to learn. They took the game upstairs and put it on the table and played for hours. I’m not sure if it’s something that they will play with regularly, however I think it is a game that most young boys would enjoy at least once to occupy their time.
