By far the biggest of the May movie releases, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) is #1 in its initial week on both iTunes and Fandango’s top 10 VOD lists.
This comes 60 days after its theatrical debut, with the longer-than-average window now typical for most Disney titles after aggressive home viewing placement during and right after Covid.
What’s surprising is how easily Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” (Focus) beat out Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” among other new releases. The former just passed the $20 million domestic gross mark over its fourth weekend. “Garfield” is at $91 million, four and a half times bigger, and part of a period where animated titles dominate both on screen and at home.
“The Bikeriders” was #2 most of the week at iTunes and #2 at Fandango for the full-week chart. It’s now #3 at iTunes, behind “Civil War” (A24), surging at a reduced price after significant success at $19.99 earlier.

With a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 81, by all accounts, “The Fall Guy” was one of the most crowd-pleasing and entertaining films of the year, a mix of comedy, action, romance, and blockbuster-sized thrills. Our review of the film described it as “exuberant and kinetic” and a “bright and energetic action movie about the joy of making action movies.”
Directed by David Leitch, “The Fall Guy” stars Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling (“Barbie,” “La La Land,” “Drive”) as Colt Seavers, a battle-scarred stuntman who is drafted back into service after a near-career ending accident when Tom Ryder (Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson; “Bullet Train”), the star of a mega-budget studio movie—being directed by Colt’s ex, Jody Moreno, played by Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer,” “A Quiet Place” films, “Sicario”)—goes missing.

Updated: Animation domination continues at the global and international box office with Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 leading the pack this frame, and Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 still positively on fire after five sessions. At the same time, we’re seeing encouraging numbers for all major titles in release. And that’s a great thing; yes, there is reason to be positive.
Already this week, Inside Out 2 became Pixar’s highest grossing movie ever globally, and the Despicable Me/Minions franchise became the first animated franchise to reach $5B global. Neither of the current films in release are close to done. To wit: DM4 still has Japan, Korea and Italy on deck.
IO2, meanwhile, is going to Japan on August 1 — and that market may just help propel the Pixar sequel past Frozen 2 to become the biggest animated film of all time worldwide.

After giddying up to bring Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 to cinemas just last month, director-star Kevin Costner is going to have to hold his horses before delivering the second instalment in his four-part Western epic. Per THR's reporting, Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 has been dropped from its originally planned 16 August theatrical release date, and will instead hit cinemas at an as-yet-unconfirmed later point in time.
The official reason cited for Costner's Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema temporarily pulling the pin on the sequel's release is that they want to give the first film a chance to grow its audience. Having to date made $25 million on a $100 million budget ($58 million of which came from Costner's own coffers), it's seems that the filmmaker's wildly ambitious, passion-fuelled big genre swing has yet to really connect with cinemagoers. However, with the film set to hit PVOD platforms on 16 July, Costner and...

George Miller’s Furiosa is heading to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray next month: more on the release here.
The best blockbuster of the summer? Well, George Millers fifth Mad Max film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. That just about edges out The Fall Guy and the pleasantly surprising Twisters thus far, even though Furiosa failed to ignite at the box office. A direct prequel to the superb Mad Max: Fury Road, it wasn’t quite up to the standard of its forerunner, but still: nobody is making cinema like this.
On an IMAX screen, it was spectacular. At home? Some of the spectacle is inevitably going to be diminished. Still, the 4K disc promises to offer quite the home cinema workout, and we now know when the movie’s landing on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK.
The date to note down is 12th August.

Exclusive: Will Forte and D’Arcy Carden have been cast as leads in darkly comic drama series Sunny Nights for Australian streamer Stan. As we revealed in March, Trent O’Donnell is directing and exec producing, and Echo Lake Entertainment is among the producers.
Sunny Nights will follow siblings Martin (Forte) and Vicki (Carden) Marvin who venture to Sydney determined to start their spray tan business. When they get caught up in the city’s criminal underworld, they must figure out how to stay alive, out of prison and in the black. It’s billed as “a story of how a little bit of sun, a change of scenery, and a touch of violent crime can help a person find their true self.”
The series continues a recent trend for Nine Entertainment-owned streamer Stan to order plot-driven comedy-dramas with a mix...

John Krasinski’s If was released into cinemas on May 17 and last month, the family film was already announced to be available on digital streaming outlets for rent or purchase. The studio had also planned for a physical media release with a 4K Blu-ray set to hit stores on August 13. However, in between, the Ryan Reynolds imaginary friend comedy has just been made available to stream for subscribers of the service Paramount+.
This film is one of the many this year that has seen fast turnarounds from movie theater screenings to home video availability. It was recently announced that the epic Kevin Costner Western, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One, will be made available to rent or purchase on streaming on July 16, which is mere weeks after the movie premiered in theaters. Steve Carell’s choice of the ultimate ‘rizz’ king of Hollywood might hurt some Tom Holland fans. The 28-year-old actor will probably be jealous of 43-year-old Ryan Gosling, who earned the title from Carell. Gosling and Carell earlier worked together in the romantic comedy film, Crazy, Stupid, Love.

As a film actor, Emily Blunt has become one of the jack of all trades of her generation, shining in dramas, comedies, musicals, romances, war films and even horror movies. Who can do all that? But with each new project, Blunt challenges herself to take risks into new arenas that she has never tried before, a boldness that has earned her critical respect across the board.
It’s not just her versatility that has impressed critics and audiences alike, but her determination to dig deep into the characters she portrays to get at their true essence. Along with that critical appreciation has come shelves-worth of awards and accolades, including four Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, including two wins. Blunt has also been nominated for five Golden Globes for her film work, four BAFTA Awards and, with the release of “Oppenheimer,” her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Whenever joyless grumps like myself end up holding readers captive so we can drone on about "the kinds of movies they don't make anymore," well, sometimes the right movie comes rolling around at just the right time, like a godsend from the heavens itself. "Fly Me to the Moon" might as well encapsulate everything certain movie fans feel nostalgic for these days, wrapped in one irresistible package. A pair of bona fide, charismatic, capital-letter Movie Stars anchoring a throwback romantic comedy that centers on arguably the most celebrated accomplishment in American history, the Apollo 11 Moon landing? Say less!

Aaron Taylor-Johnson and director David Mackenzie have started filming their new movie, Fuze, in and around London. More here:
As speculation has built over whether or not Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be the next James Bond 007, the man himself has been preparing for his next film role. Off the back of his supporting turn in this summer’s The Fall Guy, he’s now taking on the lead role in a heist thriller by the name of Fuze.
We’ve talked about the film before, our interest piqued by the fact that the brilliant David Mackenzie is directing the feature. I’ll get told off by Ryan Lambie of this very parish if I don’t immediately direct you to 2016’s superb Hell Or High Water, but I don’t think he’ll mind if I salute both Starred Up and Young Adam as well.

Alright everyone, prepare to gird your loins again. Puck reports that a Devil Wears Prada sequel is in the works, with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt set to return to their roles.
While writer Aline Brosh McKenna may return to pen the script, not necessarily in the conversation is Anne Hathaway, who originally starred in the 2006 film about a young assistant who has to contend with one of the world’s worst bosses — a high-powered fashion magazine editor.
Last April, Hathaway didn’t sound optimistic about a Prada sequel, telling V Magazine that “We all love each other and if somebody could come up with a way to do it, I think we’d all be crazy not to. But there’s a huge difference in the world now with technology, and one of the things about that particular story is it was about producing a physical object. Now with so much being digital,...

It’s “Back to the Future” week at Netflix, literally.
Not only is Robert Zemeckis’ 1985 classic time travel comedy the #6 film at the streamer, but one of the decade’s most iconic characters is back with the just-released “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” #1 there.
Picking up theatrical franchises isn’t unprecedented for the streamer. Netflix produced the second “Knives Out” film and is currently in production on the third. Previously, the company took shots at the “Cloverfield” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series — to little impact. Netflix has continued some Tyler Perry series. But “Beverly Hills Cop” is a whole other level in terms of previous iconic success.
The 1984 original was one of the biggest comedy hits ever released, with an adjusted domestic gross of over $600 million. A fourth film has been in the works for years, with Murphy, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and Netflix joining forces to license “Beverly Hills Cop...

It is the highest-grossing film of the year, and so far, it is also at the top of the list of biggest opening weekends in North America. Find out whether movies like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and others made it to the top 5 highest-grossing opening weekends of 2024 list.

After movies like The Fall Guy and Furiosa made their home debuts mere weeks after their theatrical premieres, Jeff Nichols’ period drama The Bikeriders joins the pack as it revs up to hit digital outlets tomorrow. The film garnered much praise from critics, including our own Chris Bumbray, who said in his review, “This is the rare film where I almost hope there’s a more extended version, as I found some of the side characters fascinating and worth further development. […] It’s rare I look at my watch during a movie hoping there’s more or it left, but that’s what happened to me here quite a bit, so take that as high praise.”
The press release from Universal reads,
“Loyalty, power, and brotherhood collide in Focus Features’ ‘must-see summer movie’ (USA Today) that critics are calling ‘Goodfellas on Harley-Davidsons’ (Indiewire). The Bikeriders is available for the first...

Hollywood star Ryan Gosling is known for his charismatic presence on and off the screen and has captivated audiences with a diverse range of memorable roles throughout his career. However, before gaining recognition for his performances in films like The Notebook and Barbie, the actor embodied another iconic character in a TV series, Young Hercules.

From Inside Out 2 To The Fall Guy, Here Are The Box Office Winners & Losers Of 2024(Photo Credit –YouTube)
This summer has shown us too many sequels, and while some of them have done incredibly well at the box office, others weren’t much celebrated in 2024. Despite ticket sales mounting for every blockbuster release, some sequels should have skipped theatres altogether, yes, we’re talking about the Mad Max franchise’s latest release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. As much as fans expected the movie would live up to the earlier instalments, this chapter faced a treacherous road of failure. And yet, some films managed to pack in crowds, like Dune: Part Two, which performed well at the box office. As we wait for more sequels and new movies for the remaining 2024, let’s explore the winners and losers of 2024 at the box office till now.

Emily Blunt has landed a lot of fan-favorite roles and worked with a multiplicity of filmmakers and screenwriters throughout her career, with Taylor Sheridan being one of them since the pair worked on Sicario together. In fact, her iconic role of Kate Macer in this very movie was one that the studios wanted for a male actor.

Fortunately for her, all of this ended up in her favor in more than one way. For one, Blunt managed to score the role in the $85 million movie instead of letting herself get replaced by a male actor. For another, after getting cast in the role, she perfectly laid down her one demand on how she was going to play her character in that macho world which was effectively taken care of by the director.

Would theaters even be operating if not for animated films? It’s a fair question, heavily reinforced by this weekend when “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) and “Inside Out 2” (Disney) combined to gross $105 million.
So far in 2024, animated features have grossed a little under $1 billion, more than 25 percent of the total gross. Take that amount away, it’s hard to imagine most theaters staying afloat. That’s a big increase from 2023, when similar releases made up around 18 percent.
The sixth entry in the “Despicable Me/Minions” franchise grossed about $75 million for the three day weekend, $122.6 million total for five days to take #1 with ease. “Inside Out 2” took second with $30 million, down only 48 percent despite strong new competition. That comes to more than two thirds of the $157 million total.

Gru and the Minions set off fireworks at the box office as America celebrated its birthday. “Despicable Me 4,” the latest chapter in Universal and Illumination’s long-running franchise about a recovering supervillain who trades world domination for a family life, dominated the competition, earning $122.6 million over its first five days of release and $75 million during the three-day weekend. The movie opened on Wednesday, allowing it to fully capitalize on the Fourth of July holiday.
But “Despicable Me’s” appeal transcends borders. Internationally, the film earned $106.9 million from 73 markets, bringing its global earnings to $229.5 million. Even better, “Despicable Me 4” carries a relatively economical $100 million production budget, which should make it very profitable for the companies behind it, to say nothing of all the Minions merch they will sell. For context, films at Pixar and Disney, Illumination’s main rival, routinely cost $200 million to make.

As Pixar’s sequel unexpectedly becomes the fastest-ever $1bn movie, and with Despicable Me 4 poised to top the box office, film-makers reveal the secrets of their successes – and why adults are the new superfans of family films
Five weeks ago, Hollywood was in the doldrums. A succession of hotly tipped blockbusters – The Fall Guy, Furiosa, If – flopped. The mood was ominous. The last time early summer box-office takings had been so low was in 2000.
Today, considerably more cheerful records are being broken, thanks entirely to children’s films. Three weeks ago saw the release of Inside Out 2, Pixar’s sequel to its 2015 animation about the emotions jostling for supremacy in the head of an 11-year-old girl named Riley.

Gru and his gang of minions are setting off box office fireworks this Independence Day.
“Despicable Me 4,” the latest entry in Universal and Illumination’s wildly successful animated franchise, opened to $27 million on Wednesday. The sequel brings back Steve Carell as Gru, a recovering supervillain turned secret agent, and pits him against Will Ferrell as a French baddie named Maxime Le Mal. Yet it’s the minions, those anarchic, highlighter-yellow critters, who are the biggest attractions, having starred in not just the “Despicable Me” films, but also a series of spinoffs. Look for “Despicable Me 4” to earn roughly $120 million over the five-day holiday weekend.
That strong showing is welcome news for movie theaters, which have endured a bruising start to the summer after promising films like “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa” bombed. Things have been turning around, however, with Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” Sony’s...

That strong showing is welcome news for movie theaters, which have endured a bruising start to the summer after promising films like “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa” bombed. Things have been turning around, however, with Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” Sony’s...

Ryan Gosling has worn many faces over the years. Being one of the most recognized and respected actors in the film industry, his works have become ingrained into the very fabric of Hollywood ever since he starred in The Notebook. Since then he has been a part of blockbuster after blockbuster, proving time and time again that one actor can play as many iconic roles are they want.
Ryan Gosling was most recently seen in David Leitch’s The Fall Guy | Universal Pictures
While he has always been an extremely respected actor, in the past few years, this fame has sky-rocketed to an extent no one could have seen coming. Gosling’s last five films have collectively grossed almost $2 billion worldwide. This number is extremely impressive as only superhero movies are known for hitting numbers this high. Knowing this, let’s take a look back and see what made these films so special.

The Australian screen industry is celebrating after the country’s Location Offset scheme was raised to 30%.
The legislation, which was announced in May, was made law today and officially came into effect on July 1. It raises the rebate for TV and film productions shooting in the country from the previous 16.5% to 30% and will likely trigger more overseas investment.
Kate Marks, CEO of production body Ausfilm, hailed the change, saying: “This is fantastic news for the industry. The 30% Location Offset will provide certainty for international productions, supporting a stable pipeline of work for thousands of Australian screen workers and businesses, and triggering investment into new industry capacity and capabilities.”
Australian TV and film bodies have been advocating for the rebate improvement for years, work that has become all the more vital as Australia attracts more and more international shoots thanks to generous regional rebate systems in states such as Victoria and New South Wales.

Note: This is not a ranking but rather a collection of 2024’s best movies so far.
10. Civil War — War Action
If you’ve ever wondered what may happen to our country if the divide worsens,
Alex Garland’s got you covered. Civil War revolves around exactly what you’ve already deduced from the title, following a group of army journalists on their journey across dystopian America as they try to reach the White House before the rebels.
9. Immaculate — Horror
For those of you starving for either good ol’ horrors or more Sydney Sweeney content, Michael Mohan released Immaculate. This movie is a story of a devout woman of faith who settles down in a seemingly peaceful new convent… Only to soon discover that its dark secrets leave no place for the faithful in a square mile.

Eddie Murphy cheerfully shoots his way through California’s wrong ‘uns in a charming revival of a 40-year-old franchise. Here’s our Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F review.
As the first Beverly Hills Cop movie to be released after its iconic theme was covered by Crazy Frog, Axel F perhaps lands on Netflix with more baggage than most.
It’s landing straight on Netflix, for a start, in a period where the streamer’s original output hasn’t been exactly glowing (Richard Linklater’s Hit Man being a notable exception). Action-comedy The Fall Guy just failed to set the box office alight, and after years of sequels, reboots, and sequel-reboots, it’s easy to imagine that we’re approaching peak franchise-fatigue. Was anyone really asking for a Beverly Hills Cop 4?
The answer might well be no, but, now that it’s here, I’m happy to report that Beverly Hills Cop...

Prince William’s latest encounter with ‘Ted Lasso’ actress Hannah Waddingham may not be the most awkward of situations, but let’s just say the future king got schooled on the act of not casually dropping spoilers without warning.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, in all its pink glory, concomitantly managed to blow patriarchal standards to smithereens and make audiences double down with laughter thanks to the comically genius duo of Ryan Gosling’s himbo Ken and Margot Robbie’s eponymous Mattel doll with an existential crisis.
Barbie (2023) | Warner Bros.
Hilarious as the pair was, however, in their utopian Barbieland, it was nowhere nearly as mortifying as some of the shoes the Barbie co-stars had been in as child actors.

In a move that underscores the rapidly evolving landscape of film distribution, Jeff Nichols’ latest directorial effort, “The Bikeriders,” is set to make its Video on Demand (VOD) debut on July 9, 2024 – a mere 18 days after its theatrical release. This swift transition from cinema to home screens reflects a growing trend in Hollywood, as studios grapple with changing audience behaviors and the financial pressures of the post-pandemic era.
“The Bikeriders,” a period drama starring Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Norman Reedus, and Jodie Comer, tells the fictionalized story of the Vandals Mc, a motorcycle club rising to prominence in 1960s Chicago. Despite receiving critical acclaim, evidenced by its 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has struggled to find its footing at the box office.
Since its June 21 theatrical debut, “The Bikeriders” has earned $23.7 million against a reported budget of nearly $40 million. The film’s opening weekend saw a respectable $9.7 million haul,...

Exclusive: Stan is saying goodbye to the Chalmers-Davis family.
The Australian streamer has put a fifth and final season of Bump into production, with filming underway in Sydney. The comedy-drama is Stan’s longest-running local scripted series, with the first season having launched back in January 2021.
The show is centered around ambitious teenage girl Oly, who unexpectedly has a baby, and the complications that follow for the Davis and Chalmers families.
The final season will hint at the future for the lead characters, jumping between past and present, as they face the cancer diagnosis of Oly’s mother Angie (Claudia Karvan) and try to celebrate the joy of Oly’s second pregnancy. Stan is providing the audience with a chance to be an extra by providing 30-second videos explaining what they’d like to see happen in the final episodes.

Though they’ve worked together only once (the animated “Happy Feet”), Australian director George Miller and recent AFI Life Achievement Award winner Nicole Kidman share a distinction this week. Both of their most recent films lead on respective home viewing charts.
For Warner Bros. and Miller, the #1 status for the newly released “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is positive news after its very disappointing theatrical results. But even more than a normal high-return PVOD release, it is available for a $24.99 digital purchase price rather than the standard initial $19.99 rental.
Kidman has provided an eclectic filmography that spans from Jane Campion and Lars von Trier to “Batman Forever” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Her latest, rom-com “A Family Affair” where she credibly plays at the age of 57 the love interest for Zac Efron, testifies to a star quality along with enduring talent. Among the summer movie highlights of 2024, romantic chemistry between charismatic stars has been a recurring theme. Titles like The Idea Of You with Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, and The Fall Guy featuring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have delivered compelling onscreen dynamics. Yet, Richard Lagravenese‘s A Family Affair, despite combining Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King, manages to present a romance that feels unexpectedly dull. Charisma Falls Short Considering the sizzling potential between Hollywood powerhouses Kidman and Efron, their lack of chemistry in this film is puzzling. Previously seen together in Lee Daniels’ 2012’s The Paperboy, which...

The Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hardy in leading roles alongside a wide range of stars, was recently released in the theaters. Despite having a star-studded cast, things do not look well for the Jeff Nichols film as it will get its online release, just 18 days after its theatrical release.

After becoming the Envy of its peers with an astonishing, record-breaking $295 million opening weekend, Inside Out 2 is continuing to bring Pixar box office Joy in a big way. In only its third weekend since release, the studio's sequel to Pete Docter's emotional 2016 animation Inside Out took $108 million at the international box office, taking the film's worldwide total past the coveted $1 billion. Not only does that make Kelsey Mann's movie the first billion dollar grossing picture of 2024, but it also sees Inside Out 2 blaze past Frozen II to become the fastest animated feature to hit that milestone, accomplishing in just 19 days what took Olaf and co 25 days previously.
Inside Out 2, which continues to explore the inner workings of a now-teenage Riley's (Kensington Tallman) mind as she hits puberty, may still have a way to go yet to dethrone Frozen II's dizzying $1.453 billion cume and become the all-time highest grossing animation.

Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders ranks in our developing list of the best movies of the year, so we’d love to tell you to go check it out on the big screen. But that opportunity has narrowed, as it is now clear that The Bikeriders will be hitting VOD on July 9th – that’s 18 days after it debuted in theaters!
It’s a bit disappointing that the chance to see The Bikeriders at the cinema is dwindling, but certainly more so that Focus Features won’t give it the chance to breathe there. While nobody expected it to be a box office juggernaut, that it is already being written off by the studio is a tremendous insult to not just the filmmakers but the whole concept of moviegoing. To date – that is, barely over a week – The Bikeriders has made around $14 million on a budget pegged upwards of $40 million. As such,...

Besides being one of the most loved and appreciated celebrities in all of Hollywood, Ryan Gosling has also proven to be rather wittily charismatic offscreen as well. In fact, when it comes to places where he doesn’t want to overshare or let his personal thoughts out, the actor has a perfectly sarcastic way of sneaking his way out. Just like he did with Stephen Colbert recently.

Appearing on the 60-year-old comedian’s show, Gosling played the Colbert Questionert and had to answer a series of questions that would, apparently, open up his true self to the rest of the world. While he did manage to go through a majority of it unscathed, at one point, he used the most clever way to shut down Colbert, and fans have been praising him over his witty comeback ever since.

Ryan Gosling was last seen in the action comedy The Fall Guy, which saw him play a stuntman embroiled in a crime involving his boss. Based on the TV show of the same name, the film was a tribute to the stunt community, with many promotional events featuring and celebrating them. Gosling’s performance was appreciated in the film.
Gosling started his career as a child actor with The All-New Mickey Mouse Club at the age of 13. The actor also made his feature film debut a few years later as a teen in Frankenstein and Me, which also starred Burt Reynolds. The Barbie star mentioned that he received extra attention on the sets of the film as Reynolds was into his mom.
