2018 Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards: Oscar frontrunner ‘Darkest Hour’ takes two

At the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Feb. 24, Oscar frontrunner “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”

Among those films that “Darkest Hour” edged out for best special makeup effects was “Wonder,” one of its two Oscar rivals for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. That film contended on the contemporary side here and lost its bid for makeup to “Pitch Perfect 3″ and hairstyling to “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.” The third Oscar nominee, “Victoria and Abdul,” was snubbed by the guild.

While each of the five guild races has five contenders, members do not always nominate those films that made the shortlist for the Best Makeup & Hairstyling Oscar. Likewise, it often cites films that failed to make the cut with the academy such as “Blade Runner 2049” which reaped bids with the guild for both period/character hair and makeup.

These awards were handed out on Feb. 24. Greg Cannom and Mary Guerrero were feted for their lifetime achievements while Gary Oldman received the Distinguished Artisan Award.
