Everything You Need to Know About Shower Sex

Here's What You Need to Know About Getting It On in the Shower

There’s something about seeing your partner dripping wet that’s just… hot.

Glistening, freshly showered skin is so appealing — but unless you make it a habit of stalking your significant other post-shower, it’s likely not a scene you come across that often.

Like other forms of watery sex, shower sex allows you to see the wet version of your partner up close and personal — but in this case, you also get the freshest, cleanest version of them.

(Not to mention, shower sex is probably the most fun type of multitasking there is.)

If you’re looking to get laid and get clean, you should know a few things before you hit the showers. Here’s the ultimate guide to having shower sex, from pros and cons to the best positions for your shower shenanigans and more.

The Pros and Cons of Shower Sex

As with anything in life, shower sex has its advantages and its drawbacks.

One obvious pro that Jenni Skyler, PhD, LMFT, C-PST, resident therapist for AdamEve.com and licensed marriage and family therapist and internationally certified sex therapist with the International Association of Psychosexual Therapists (IAPST), points out is that it’s pretty hot.

“The main pro of shower sex is that it can be super sexy,” Skyler explains. “This is because it’s a place where both people feel physically and psychologically clean.”

Basically, when we know we smell good, we feel more confident. Confidence is key when it comes to sex, so it’s a win-win.

“The idea of being dripping wet is also super sexy for many people,” says Skyler. “On a physiological level, the heat of a shower can loosen up our bodies and wash off the day, allowing for more relaxation. Feeling relaxed allows for humans to feel more aroused.”

“Shower sex is really intimate to me. I wouldn’t just do it with anyone,” says Claire, 23. “Inviting someone into your shower and cleaning each other makes me feel safe and cared for.”

The drawbacks of shower sex mainly have to do with the size and quality of the shower you’re working with — and the fact that you don’t really have a surface to lie or sit down on, which means it’ll likely involve a lot of standing.

In short, it’s not the best option if you and the other person aren’t already fairly comfortable with one and other and each other’s bodies.

Plus, if you’re showering in a cramped space, crammed underneath a small shower head with mediocre water pressure that quickly runs out of hot water, any or all of the above could easily kill the mood.

Even if you’re working with a standard-sized shower, partners with big height differences may find penetration challenging when doing it in the shower.

All of this doesn’t mean you can’t have shower sex. But if you want shower sex to be the best it possibly can be, opting for whoever’s shower is bigger, upgrading your showerhead or even prioritizing getting a room with a massive shower on your next vacation will help make it more enjoyable.

“As someone who’s plus-sized, I don’t love shower sex,” says Marci, 32. “I’m down for shower foreplay, but feel too claustrophobic to do anything more than that. Also, my boyfriend hogs the water.”

How to Have Shower Sex

Ready to get clean while you get dirty? Here are a few key shower sex tips to keep in mind.

1. Clean Your Shower

It seems pretty obvious, but if shower sex is happening at your place, you’ll need to give your bathroom a solid clean. A dirty shower is a pretty big turnoff for lots of people.

“Nothing kills the mood faster than seeing mold on the shower walls… especially if I’m being pushed up against one,” says Bri, 26. “Clean your shower!”

While you’re at it, if it’s a smaller shower, you might consider removing all but the necessary toiletries. This will maximize space, so there’s less of a chance one of you is knocking things over while you’re going at it.

2. Set the Mood

If you own a nice scented candle, now would be a good time to light one (or several smaller tea-light ones) to create a little ambiance. Dim the lights, add some sensual music, and it’s a whole different experience from your average shower.

3. Incorporate a Shower Stool or Chair

Chair sex is its own brand of complex, but it can be a big boost here — depending on how comfortable you are with standing sex.

“This is a good investment if the shower is big enough, or if there is good storage in the bathroom to use it when wanted,” Skyler explains. “The stool/chair allows for the couple to relax more rather than depend on their athleticism to hold them upright.”

Plus, you could even use it to enjoy a shower-based lap dance.

4. Have Waterproof Lube Handy

Even if it’s wet, water isn’t a lubricant. Waterproof lube — that is, lube that’s not water-based, like  silicone-based options — can still help things slide in and out more easily (especially if anal play is part of what you and your partner want to accomplish in the shower). Keep it within arm’s reach for use if needed and you’re golden.

Sex Positions to Try in the Shower

Standing Missionary

If you want face-to-face intimacy and deep penetration but don’t have enough space to lie down in your shower, the standing missionary position is a solid shower sex alternative.

“To recreate this in the shower without laying down, couples can use the wall to brace one partner as the other penetrates standing up,” Skyler explains. “If the receiving partner is little and light enough, they can wrap their legs around the person standing to create an even stronger missionary simulation.”

Standing Doggy Style

Another favorite that’s easy to modify, doggy style also requires very little range of motion if you’re working in tight quarters.

“For doggy position, the receiver can simply bend over at a 90-degree angle and spread their arms on the shower wall to brace their body,” says Skyler. “The person penetrating can then enter safely from behind.”

She also notes that you can easily add clitoral stimulation to this position with a small, waterproof vibrator.

Oral Sex

If you don’t mind a little water in your eyes, oral sex in the shower can be fun for both partners, and the added wetness means your mouth won’t dry out mid-act.

“The giver can squat down or kneel on the floor,” Skyler explains. “If the person kneeling wants to protect their knees, simply place two folded wash-clothes on the shower floor so the giver is more comfortable.”

Mutual Masturbation

If your shower doesn’t allow you to go all the way, hand stuff is extra fun in the shower, though here again, if it's for a handjob, you may want some non-water soluble lube.

And if you’re looking for ways to extend your sexy time, getting things started in the shower this way and finishing in drier, more spacious quarters can help build anticipation and act as foreplay.
