Author Alexandra S. D. Hinrichs and illustrator Michael Garland’s picture book The Traveling Camera chronicles the travels of Lewis Hine, who used his camera to document child labor in the 20th century

Stunning visuals and poetic text combine to tell the inspiring story of Lewis Hine (1874–1940), a teacher and photographer who employed his art as a tool for social reform.

Working for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC), Hine traveled the country, taking pictures of children as young as five toiling under dangerous conditions in cotton mills, seafood canneries, farms, and coal mines. He often wore disguises to sneak into factories, impersonating a machinery inspector or traveling salesman. He said, “If I could tell this story in words, I wouldn’t need to lug a camera.” His poignant pictures attracted national attention and were instrumental in the passage of child labor laws.

The Traveling Camera includes extensive back matter with timelines, original photographs, and a bibliography.

“Lyrical writing combines with charming illustrations to deepen the reader’s engagement with Hine and the children he cared about. The Traveling Camera offers a way of looking at history as a confluence of art, activism, and social change.” —Uma Krishnaswami, author of Book Uncle and Me

“This book is stunning, both in words and pictures, truly a snapshot of history.”―Jane Yolen, author of Owl Moon, Devil’s Arithmetic, and I Am the Storm

“A searching picture of a pioneering social crusader.”—Kirkus Reviews

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-8-In this biography of Lewis Hine, readers see that he documented the human spirit in the form of photographs, or Hineographs, as he called them. He is known for photographing children who labored to help their families make ends meet during the early 1900s when child labor laws were not enforced. Born in Oshkosh, WI, Hine knew firsthand what it was like to have to help the family financially after his father died at a young age. Hine worked in horrible conditions, trying to keep food on the table for his two sisters and mother. The picture book begins with Hines as an adult traveling across the United States using his box camera to document children who are working in mills and fields. Beautiful illustrations, which appear to be a mix of digital and traditional media, bring the story to life. Hine visits factories, farms, and mines where children are laboring day and night in terrible conditions: "At the cotton mill I tell the overseer The Company sent me to take pictures of broken machinery. He believes me, lets me inside." Whatever it took to get inside the mill or factory to take his pictures, Hine would do it. His aim was to share his photos with the world, to make them, "sick and tired of the whole business, to make child labor pictures records of the past." Back matter includes a time line and photographs from Hine's life and of his work. VERDICT An excellent purchase for all libraries.-Tracy Cronce, Stevens Point Public School District, Stevens Point, WIα(c) Copyright 2011. Love the Book and Author....

I really enjoyed this picture book about Lewis Hine, a photographer who traveled around the United States in the early 1900s, taking pictures of children working on farms, in factories, cotton mills, and more. This was before child labor was illegal in this country and his photographs helped bring national attention to the plight of these children, which eventually led to the passage of child labor laws.

The text is written in a lyrical prose, and includes quotes from Hine throughout, which I thought was a great touch. It includes fascinating details, such as the fact that Hine used the buttons on his coat to estimate the ages of the children, as some of them didn't know. There is also a substantial "Note to the Reader" at the end, that provides more information about Lewis Hine, child labor today (still a problem in many parts of the world) and a timeline. The illustrations are beautifully done and the book includes Hine's photographs as well.

This stirring picture book introduces the subject of child labor and the heroic efforts of investigative photographer Lewis Hine to document this plight. The author and illustrator show Hine at work under daunting conditions to bring this cause to light. Hinrichs offers a tender portrayal of this important crusader with camera. The illustrations by Garland fit the spirit of the story beautifully. A compelling story of how change is possible.

I loved Alexandra Hinrich’s first book! The style of the book & its layout are wonderful. The story is sweet & Simple, but I can tell by the details that she did her research on the times! An excellent addition to my library!

This non-fiction picture book biography is a beautiful and rich book. The voice of Lewis Hine is woven strongly through the author’s lyrical text, and amplified by charming illustrations. Despite the seriousness of the topic (child labor), the book captures Hine’s spirit of hope. Recommended for school, library and home!

THE TRAVELING CAMERA is an excellent way to show children that kids just like them had no "childhood" once upon a time. Here, they learn how devoted people helped the country see the hardships forced upon the young, eventually bringing change. The story could be a devastatingly upsetting experience, but it shines through Hinrichs' compelling text and Garland's masterful art. Even though they introduce us to dark times and places, they hold our hands and our hearts. They provide brief glimpses into the cannery, shoe factory, coal mine, and other assembly-line jobs forced on the young. Yet, they show the noble, responsible hearts of Millie and Charlie and Odella and so many other children. Ultimately, we understand that America was not only forged by generals and tycoons, but by single spirits like Lewis Hine who believed in change for the least among us. And in an artistic parallel, children see the devotion of a storyteller and artist who believe in crafting books about true heroes.

My children love the poetic writing style and magnificent illustrations and I love the many lessons that spark conversation during and after each reading.

This story gives readers a beautiful account of a man who made it his mission in life to capture and expose raw and real images of young children who suffered through difficult child labor conditions. With lyrical text, it is enjoyable to read while having quotes from Lewis Hine sprinkled in. The back matter is excellent and provides a great deal of historical information to accompany the story. Why do we not know more about this man who worked so hard to expose something so troubling in our history? Great for upper elementary/middle school readers.
