This book was really cute, but a little hard to understand.
The main thing that made this book more confusing than it needed to be was the dialogue. There were little to no tags on pieces of dialogue, so it was very difficult to know who was talking at each point. The only time I knew who was talking was when it was in first person (Mr. Trunks) or it had a tag on it (i.e. Mom said).
As for the drawings, emotion was articulated beautifully through light and color. You could tell happy parts from sad parts, and energetic parts from slow parts. These choices helped a lot to move the story along with a good flow.
Lastly, the moral was great: return things that aren't yours to the rightful owner. This moral was also conveyed with ease and you did not have to search for it.
All in all a great book, it could just use a little more editing to make the dialogue more specific.
While the concept of showing the positivity of social media in a children’s book is unique, the story became muddled midway through. One reason for this is the lack of specification in the dialogue. It becomes unclear who is speaking at times, which can easily become confusing for the age group this book is geared towards. The Instagram type posts were cute and recognizable, however the social media language is a lot at once. My youngest children are 8 and 10, so it was easy to grasp that concept but may be harder for younger ages.
Overall this is a very cute children’s book that I think many will adore and fall in love with.
A very cute and sweet story about the adventures of a lost toy and it's attempts to return to the child it loves.
What I Liked:
I really enjoyed the plot of this story! The way the whole internet banded together to try to reunite Libby and Mr. Trunks was so sweet, and the illustrations resembling social media posts was such a fun little touch to really capture the feel of the journey! I could see how this book could comfort children who worry about their own lost toys and reassure them that their toys are having wonderful adventures of their own and might still return to them someday.
What I Didn't Like:
At times the text felt a bit disjointed, especially as a read aloud to a group of children. Flipping back and forth between text in Mr. Trunks' head and dialogue between other characters was not clearly marked apart from the color of the text, and extra explanation regarding who it talking at each point might be required to help young children understand events.
