Nature’s most successful insects captured in remarkable macrophotography

In
Ants, photographer Eduard Florin Niga brings us incredibly close to the most numerous animals on Earth, whose ability to organize colonies, communicate among themselves, and solve complex problems has made them an object of endless fascination. Among the more than 30 species photographed by Niga are leafcutters that grow fungus for food, trap-jaw ants with fearsome mandibles, bullet ants with potent stingers, warriors, drivers, gliders, harvesters, and the pavement ants that are always underfoot. Among his most memorable images are portraits—including queens, workers, soldiers, and rarely seen males—that bring the reader face-to-face with these creatures whose societies are eerily like our own. Science writer Eleanor Spicer Rice frames the book with a lively text that describes the life cycle of ants and explains how each species is adapted to its way of life. Ants is a great introduction to some of the Earth’s most successful creatures that showcases the power of photography to reveal the unseen world all around us.

The conversion to kindle is just horrible. This is a book mainly composed of lots of beautiful pictures, and they are just cut in half when the picture is a two page image. So, one page has the abdomen, the next the head. Or one 3/4 of a head the other 1/4. And, the program does not allow you to view two pages side by side. Other books on kindle allow that option, but this one doesn't.Please fix this! So much care was put into making this a beautiful book, and now it is so ugly.

The book arrived very quickly and well packaged. I just opened the book. It is filled with amazing photographs of many different ant species. This is a dream come-true for anybody who is fascinated by all creatures big and small that inhabit our blue planet.

I ordered a book on ants as I was researching that subject. For $25. I wasn’t expecting very much. I was astounded by the very large super high quality book that came. The photographs are amazing. The ants are full page magnified and they look beautiful. It gives one such an appreciation of nature.

My 11 yo son loved learning about ants from watching AntsCanada on YouTube, so we gave him this book as a birthday gift. The photographs show details of ants that I had never even imagined, and the written accompaniment provides a solid overview of the ant world plus some interesting facts (a few new ones that my son didn’t already know from AntsCanada). He would have liked even more details and explanations in the text, but the main focus of this coffee-table book is the photographs which are incredible. A gem for ant, insect, and macro photography lovers.

It has always seemed to me that there is more aesthetic tomfoolery than is strictly needed for function in nature, but especially in insects. This is the spur in my cosmological certainty and, while I’m sure it’s a fabrication of my, it has made the them endlessly fascinating to me as an artist. However these animals are some of the most difficult to find excellent reference photos of, especially the more irksome ones (anything but butterflies basically). This book is heaven sent for my purposes and for anyone who is taken by the beauty of these little, articulated machines that pop out of eggs hardwired to go. I’ve been hunting insect visual reference for years, amassing an uncommonly large collection for so rare these volume and this book is paramount among them. The text reveals more of the miracles inherent in these creatures, but this is predominantly a visual artifact. Only one example: I’ve been having trouble for months finding clear images revealing the joint mechanics of insect limbs and, while I can’t say this book is the bee’s knees, it certainly is helping me with the ones on ants. If these authors did a book like this on flies and praying mantises my library would be whole. Highly, highly recommended for those who share my peculiarities.

Great for a coffee table. As a myrmecologist, thumbing through the book was like reading an old high school yearbook and remembering old friends from under a microscope. But my mother was even more enthralled by views of ants she had never had a chance to see before. The big chomp-jawed ant on the cover really sang for me. :-) The last time I saw an Australian jumping ant I remember it eyeing me malevolently like it would like nothing better than to try chasing me into the ground.

Beautiful, big book that guests and family love looking at. Great facts about ants are included, but it's not full of details like a textbook would be. There are macro pictures on every set of pages that give you a detailed, crisp ant's eye view. Very well done and impressive.

This has amazing macro photography alongside very interesting fact heavy text. It's beautifully presented. I got this for my hugh finctioning autistic 9 year old who currently has a hyper fixation on all things Ants. This has been an adequate source of new knowledge for him. The physical quality of the book is stunning. A beautiful book.

This book is very big and while I would have liked more information about ants the macro photography is amazing, and I know the guy who took these lovely photos. I recommend that you buy this if you want to see ants in a close up way that you would only be able to see using a microscope. 🐜
