In this case, the important bit is in the last couple sentences in the cited rules. If you cast Pillage, you can hold priority and cast Siege Smash, which more or less shuts down the stack so nobody gets priority (aside from a couple of weird exceptions that aren't directly relevant to the question). Once Siege Smash resolves, though, the stack opens up, you regain priority, and if you pass, your opponent then gains priority and can cast a counterspell targeting Pillage.

Can spells with Split Second on them be used to avoid countermagic?

if i cast Pillage can i hold priority/respond to it with Siege Smash before the opponents can respond with Spell Pierce?

oh i look forward to it! no worries/judgment from me I'm always interested in seeing new brews (My deck is virtually just Kevin Mackey's GP winning deck from 2016 with Pillage and Winter Moon put in and a janky Chandra, the Firebrand) so im very much so looking forward to what you come up with!

I have replaced Pillage with Requisition Raid, which reduced the average converted mana cost of this deck from 3.65 to 3.61, which is very nice, as the newer card is far more versatile, although I do dearly wish that it was an instant, rather than a sorcery.

I have replaced Pillage with Soul Shatter, since the latter card better matches the theme of this deck, and that change did increase the prevalence of black in this deck, but I designed this deck to be able to handle such a condition; I almost chose Rush of Dread, but I decided that I preferred an instant over a sorcery and one that affected all opponents simultaneously over one that affected only a single opponent.

psionictemplar The Pillages are a meta choice, so switching one out for a final Stone Rain is a fair call. I'll make that the default.

For the Pelt Collectors, I don't disagree with you, but I'd like to know your reasoning. They're still reliably a 2/2 for 1, outclassing the Tattermunge Maniacs, and the Brighthearth Bannerets lose a lot of utility. Still gotta win once you've smashed their lands. I'm willing to be convinced, though, so what's the line you see?

Did some playtesting last night with "regular lantern control" just to get a feel for how the deck...quickly discovered that I am a terrible and incompetent pilot of this deck in its base form... but I got the idea and really got to appreciate wallisfaces decklist that was posted above.

This is how playing "lantern control skred red land destruction" went for me last night...it feels awkward...always lol... with the exception of "bolt the bird" and playing Mind Stone on turn 2 into Lantern of Insight then playing Koth of the Hammer on turn 3 it just always felt bad... I was surprised how often I naturally opened with shredder and lantern though which was neat... Blood Moon, Pillage/Molten Rain... these cards feel like they should be better than they are... but kinda just felt like "win more" or wishing for something else.

All in all sure it can work but I really found myself missing Inquisition of Kozilek more than anything.
